Drifta Kitchen might be coming here

Drifta kitchens are available in the UK. :wings:

A lad, Mark Beech, was working for Drifta when he was in Oz but has now moved back to the UK and has continued making them under some sort of agreement. All the bits he couldn't source in the UK are sent over and he assembles them.

I bought the DCB (I think) a few weeks back at a Land Rover show he was exhibiting at. Since then I've used it for a week as I went on a tour of the Scottish Highlands.

All I can say is, it is a fantastic bit of kit, so well thought out and very, very well made. It's not cheap but they old saying, you get what you pay for is obviously true.

Here's mine in a place called Gairloch (hmmm, it won't show my image so I've left a link)

My only issue is my cooker doesn't fit on the cooker drawer, but it's 20 years old and I suppose it's a good excuse to finally upgrade to a Coleman dual fuel which fits perfectly....

With the building market tanked here in the US I would think there are cabinet shops with full CNC capability that could whip these things out. I'm in the same situation as Luke in that I am having a product made in Australia and they don't have half the parts needed over there. It is far cheaper sending parts over than shipping full blown product. The company I am working with also produces very differently than we do. I'm spending a little more time up front making sure my SOP's are in place and that I have detailed every aspect of the quality standards that our customers expect. We actually recomended that our customer go directly through the Australian firm, but they didn't want to do that for a variety of reasons. So once my build specs and SOP's are in place, I'll be flying over for a few weeks for training. It's all manageable it just takes a little more up front and in your contracts.

Drifta kitchens

We've recently rented a Trackabout Camper Trailer for a 5 day trip and it came with a Drifta kitchen. The bad news is that we liked so much that the thought of buying a camper trailer has crossed our minds on more than one occasion now. The good news is that this Drifta is a brilliant bit of kit! This unit had been up to Cape York on many occasioins and has covered over 100 000Km in 3.5 years.

The Drifta kitches are well designed and built to last. Hopefully they managed to find their way into the North American market.

Cheers,
P

Difta Kitchen

I received an email from Luke today...he just got his US bank account open(i think it was harder than expected) and can now start shipping to the US...i'm from Toronto, Ontario and hope to get one shipped as soon as they land...he's also selling plans for the kitchens and parts for the home builder so depending on cost + freight in might be a better option for some...

I just ordered a Custom LHS Drifta DPOS, I needed it shaved down to 39cm to fit under the rear cross bar on my Canadian M101. It will be made in AUS and shipped to their guy in Wenatchee Washington and I will pick it up. Only $100 for shipping from AUS which I thought was quite reasonable. Luke is a good dude to work with.

Received today, 03 Feb '11.

G’day Brenden, Luke here from Drifta camping kitchens in Australia.. sorry to bother you, but I have received an e-mail from you in the past regarding interest in our camping kitchens.. It’s taken some time, but we now have some stock in the US, and are sending over another shipment in about 5 weeks time. It will arrive there mid april. If you were still interested in a kitchen, we have time to build stock for the next lot going over, so if you are still keen at all let me know… the freight prices to the US are fairly cheap, and I am covering about half of it also. Also if you don’t mind, if you know anyone who may be interested in our kitchens/ 4wd drawer units, if you can help spread the word for us that we are sending over stock and taking orders. Appreciate that very much, and thanks for your time… rgds Luke

Little update...Luke's container arrived and I was able to pick up my Drifta DPOS beginning of June. We used it almost every day in the month of June Camping/Fishing in BC and then on a 4000km trip touching 5 States (WA, ID, MT, OR, CA) in NW USA
Can't say enough what a great bit of gear this is. It has taken camping to the next level for us.. and the most important thing.. The wife absolutely loves it.
The build quality is excellent and it's extremely well designed. The hardware is really trick too.. folding, height adjustable legs etc.
By far the best $960 AUS I have spent on camping gear.
I should mention, the DPOS isn't limited to trailer use, It slides into the back of the 80 series with 1 of the mid row seat flipped forward.

Fit through a Chaser Tailgate?

What is the height of that unit? Will it fit through the tailgate of Chaser? (Chaser tailgate opening is approximately 15" tall)

Thanks.

Edited:
Sorry, just found this on Drifta's website:

Height 16.9in
Length 66.1 in
Depth 18.9 in
Weight 66.2 lbs

Doesn't look like this will fit through the Chaser tailgate.

My DPOS is 15.5" high (39cm) I had them shave about 1.5" out of it to fit under the cross bar on my M101. There was no extra charge for the custom height.
No reason they can't do one for you that is 15" or just a tad lower for good measure.
FWIW the dimensions you posted are for the DPOR (Drifta Pull Out w/ Return)
The DPOS (S as in Short) is basically the same but is only 43.3" long (and 11lbs lighter) which I thought would make it more versatile and not limited to JUST trailer use.
The DPOS/DPOR kitchen design makes for very impressive spread between packed down volume and overall kitchen space once fully set up. I can't say enough how great it is having all the space, plus counter space on 2 levels on the Return portion.
It also works great for tying flies on if there are any Fly fishermen out there..

Thanks for the info. Nice to know Drifta will customize for a particular application.

I am bumping this ancient thread to find out if these things ever made it to the US. I have an email in to Luke, but haven't heard back.

Yes the Drifta kitchens are in the US

Yes Drifta has kitchens in the US. We purchased one of the standard DPOS units around christmas time. Dealing with Luke in Aus. was very easy by email and he has a US bank acct. with Wells Fargo so payment was simple and painless. The kitchen is a very well built unit and well thought out, it also fits perfectly in the back of our 04 jeep grand cherokee. We are very happy with it and would recomend Drifta products to anyone who is trying to decide. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
