I put 9,000 miles on mine this year (and it was driven around the world by the previous owner). The odometer will go over 50k tomorrow!
My family drove from Fort Leavenworth to the Gulf Coast and back, to Moab, UT and back, and back to the Mississippi River again. At the annual rally we drove the 4x4 trail in Arches National Park with many other ER owners. Lots of desert stripes from brush, some recovery operations too, but mostly great fun because everything works even under stress!
We're even doing some full-time living as our new home is finished - first time home buyer!
The ER is a great vehicle - engineered, designed, and crafted by a great group of professionals - it really meets the tests I've thrown its way. More importantly, I consider the ER designers and workers to be genuine friends - they're also friends to the environment who share the EXPO love of the outdoors and adventure...that's why it's a tough vehicle inside as well as out.
Besides...I carry a roll of duct tape, baling wire, and WD-40 too...what can't I fix with that? (ha ha). Really though, if you're heading into rough country, you have to secure your gear appropriately. Even an up-armor HMMWV has things that break inside...reminds me of a story about an MRAP getting stranded because of a $1 fuze failure...another thread...
ER's are tough enough for a trip to the backcountry (and in many countries' backcountry too).
