Earthroamer

It was on a forum, if briefly (this one too). It sounds as if you received the info via other means. Someone posted a few assumptions and inaccuracies based on an email sent to ER owners. This email was confidential, and absolutely did not say EarthRoamer was out of business.

Getting High

From my experience, bottled gas was useless at 14,000 ft - would barely light a lamp and the cooking flame was almost nothing. Granted, this was Bolivian gas and I have no idea what it really was, but it worked at 11,000 ft. For what it's worth, we finally cooked on a campfire and even that had to be fanned - coals did not produce enough heat.

The point being that above a certain altitude you may be eating cold food in any case.

As always with these things - YMMV!

Earthroamer - Canadian Registration

I have a quick question regarding Earthroamers - I've left several voicemails with them and have emailed over the last few weeks with no response back which isn't exactly confidence inspiring...but anyways, does anyone know if an Earthroamer can be registered in Canada? I have looked at www.riv.ca and haven't been able to accurately determine an answer.
Thanks,
Rich

I don't know for sure, can't see why not. The truck is manufactured in the US so meets all NA specs.

I've brought C6500 GMC's and Peterbilts in the county and the riv.ca site didn't answer all my Q's. So, first time out, just called the 800# and in less then 5 min.s all my questions were answered. Importing at the boreder takes less then an hour and then off to Canadian Tire (only place) for an inspection 10 min. As for the 2 types of trucks I've brought in (made in the USA) was day time running lights. and your good to go.

I too have imported vehicles into Canada, but if the vehicle doesn't have the original VIN it becomes a nightmare with 'riv'. I guess the important question is if the VIN has been changed once the conversion has been done. I have found that with vague questions that you need things in writing with 'riv' - nothing like going through the process and having to export the vehicle back to the States. Getting a statement in writing from 'riv' is an interesting process in itself - this is why I am curious as to whether an Earthroamer has been registered in Canada as a precedent.

Can't be done - the F550 is North American spec (meaning it meets all Canadian regs as well as the US ones, or can easily be ordered to do so, ie: DRL's) and the camper unit meets all US and Canadian RV specs, but the completed package is not the the Canadian list of "accepted" vehicles.

Lots of red tape between "meeting the requirements" and "being on the list".

Just curious. I believe Earthroamer will (or at least originally did) allow you to purchase your own truck and have them do the conversion. If you purchase the F550 in Canada, and register it there, and then do the conversion...?

Then it becomes an EarthRoamer, and is not "on the list". You could try but there's no way its getting through customs.

Interesting. Avi and I spent 4.5 days at US Customs in Jacksonville in 2006 because a Unicat doesn't have a "DOT" sticker on it, but finally with the help of a customs broker (for a pound of flesh of course) we got them through. I keep the paperwork in the truck for future entries. Although I had no problem at Nogales in 2007.

I wouldn't count on hearing back from them any time soon. The latest word I received, which was direct from a former ER employee, is that they are done.

Former employee is the key word here, i.e., someone who was most likely laid-off or terminated...

I am sure the slow response was because of they were closed for the holidays.

And there is no question the economy has been tough on a lot of businesses, and I am sure the stock decline really hurt ER, but ER is still building and delivering trucks and upgrading the suspension and tires on current owner vehicles (A good friend of mine traveling to Central America with me just had the larger tires installed).

I was shocked to find out ER is hurting, but it's true. All high-end "toy" manufacturers are hurting for sales. Hopefully they are just riding out the economy by temp downsizing.

They might still have service and consignment sales open, but production is most likely closed atm.
