So I am curious what is the general consensus here about the strength of the roof structure on Defenders and RRC's. Specifically- when stock for carrying the family how will they protect you in a rollover situation at freeway speed or off road? Thanks!

ROW Defenders do not have substantial, modern-standard rollover protection. I can't speak to it personally, I've never rolled one. However, I do own a ROW 110 and the first major purchase has been a roll cage (external).

Some examples from the interweb:

This is what I had heard, thanks for the concise answer. Is it a big pain or expense to add an effective cage to a 110 without stealing too much room or creating potential danger to occupants (little ones) in an on road/highway collision? Sorry to ask but I am assisting a colleague who has no 4x4 experience who is being pushed hard into a 110...

For what is worth, pretty much any old Land Rover is not going to fare well in freeway speeds rollovers. Off road most should be OK, but a Defender is not much of an improvement over the old series and those were removable and not that sturdy.
a 110 is not for a beginner there are much better more modern 4x4 that will allow your friend to get into this much safer, a 110 is for the few of us that are crazy enough to own an old Land Rover or two and wheel them, knowing very well what we have.

My 2 cents.

Yeah well I suggested a newer vehicle but he has the 'red mist' for a Defender. No shortage of $$... Personally, I find the 110 ergonomics appalling, but am trying to get him into a LC80 or a P38. With a heavy influence on a p38 because I always wanted one!

My accident in the 93 LWB wasn't a roll over, however, it is an example of how robust they are.

I am traveling at 45 mph going through a green light and an older Cadillac turns and crosses my path.

The Rangie launches over the Caddy's front completely taking off the hood and top parts of the engine.

The drivers side wheel of the RR is pushed back to the seat box.

The frame is twisted.

After coming to a stop against a telephone pole, I was able to open the driver's door and get out with only a bitten lip.

Will always own one.

Thanks all- Looking like the Defender and RRC are off the list. Still hoping for a P38, found a later 4.6HSE in a dark grey which is really nice, and looks stock. Looking at it this week...
