Nice you made it over here, it has been a while (maybe you remember donkey boy from over at JU). I have not been over there for a while since I traded my WJ for a Taco.

Guys, there is unluckily just about a 5% chance I can make it to the meet.

I was picking through this thread to try to get a head-count. This is what I came up with. Handy to put names with vehicles. How does this look?

  • jeff (bronco) friday - monday?
  • carl (tj) friday - saturday?
  • jim & beth (tundra) saturday - monday
  • paul & kids (black tj) friday - sunday
  • paul (yj) friday - monday?
  • fred (tj, paul's bro in-law) friday - monday?
  • chris (gray xj) friday - monday

Is anyone else able to attend? Any lurkers out there who plan on dropping in by surprise? If so, please feel free to chime in. (no stalkers or psychos please)

How are you doing, Carl? Any chance you could grind this week to enjoy a nice full weekend with us?

How about you, John? Your situation still the same? It'd be great to have you, but we understand if you can't.

Situation still the same, were still living on one paycheck which is my wifes. I have a hearing scheduled for the 20th of this month, hopefully i'll get what i feel i'm entitled to.

I'm embarased about this guys, it was my idea that we have this gathering and through all the hard work and sacrifices everyone was making to attend i ended up having to bow out.

It's been a tough year for me health and professionally speaking. But my family is tight and were fighting through it and will emerge stronger.

Hoping everyone has a blast, take tons of pics and tip a few for me.

BTW....those who PM'd me with offers of assistance so i could attend this trip....your class acts! There are some incredibly generous people on this board...including my best friend (of 20 years) Cowboy. Thank You all for thinking of me.

By a strange twist of fate I'm still in for at least friday pm - saturday pm.

John, sorry you're still not able to come, thanks though for relighting a fire under this one and helping to get it all sorted out again.

Thanks for the head-count. I 'm not following well enough to audit it so I will put my faith in you Chris.

Thanks also for the weather forecast - that's why I was logging on.

Put the weather in context. The daytime high on Friday predicted to be Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the upper 20s. Times of sun and clouds.
Saturday: Sunshine. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 30s. Precipitation change about 20%.

Here's the thing: This area is the highest elevation in West Virginia - about 3700 feet at the campsite. Though it is well shielded with trees, there will be wind when we are out and about. Also I would translate that 20% chance of precipitation to be delivered as snow if it comes.

I camped here this same weekend a couple years ago and it was very tolerable but please please be sure you are ready for cold days and even colder nights!

I picked up a new tent today in preparation for the WV trip - a Coleman Cimarron. This replaces a small, decrepit, three man tent that I have. We also have an enormous family tent that would be entirely too cumbersome for the trip.

Hoping to acquire a roof-top tent in the future. Until then, this Coleman seems like a good value. :)

We've got the huge family tent and the space need to go with it. The small tent I got for the boys is too small for the three of us so be ready for the condo!

Just throwing these things out as they come to me.

There is a local grocery store and outdoor supply both in the same building - it's an IGA located in Davis. ( N39 07.752 W79 27.728 )

I am planning on getting my perishable foods for breakfasts, lunch and snacks there when I arrive in town. I am thinking it might be easy to eat dinners in town but we can work that out.

I am planning on getting firewood there as well, though I think there is a place at one of the gas stations on the way down the hill toward Thomas that might sell it too. (N39 8.83 W79 29.92)

However you choose to do it, I would recommend each group bring a few armloads of firewood so that we have a good supply for morning and evening fires. There's not much deadwood around the camp site and town is close but not that close.

Trail Entrance ( N39 07.565 W79 35.159 )
Camp Site Entrance off hardpack road (N39 06.882 W79 35.794)
Camp Site (N39 06.943 W79 35.758 )

Ok Guys I've been hanging on to this as long as I can but I'm going to have to bail. My winter weather gear isn't up to snuff (just realized everything but my cheap stuff is back home) and I may need to run a "special" errand friday or saturday. 10 hrs was a lot of driving for an overnight trip to begin with anyways I guess.

Sorry to bail at the last minute but I didn't want to abandon hope to early. Maybe we can get something together in the spring.

Fridge?!

I'm planning on leaving when my kids get home from school. That puts me on location at about 6pm.

Garmin MapSource GPX file anyone?

For those who will attend this weekend, I am posting a GPX file which contains waypoints and tracks for likely destinations this weekend.

blackwater_3D_track2_070806.gif

It also has waypoints for the 100 closest Geocaches...

Please contact me for the URL.
