I've received further correspondence from Paul and he has made it clear that the Olson Tower site (camp5) would best suit our group. It should adequately accommodate 5-10 vehicles with ground tents, and/or vehicle-based camping platforms. He also states that it is the most accessible from town, though still remote, and would provide a great stepping off point for day outings.

Paul also provides travel times to the Olson site from Davis, WV.
  • Time from Davis on-pavement: 15 minutes
  • Time from pavement to site: 5 minutes
  • Total drive time from Davis: 20 minutes

Based on the information that Paul has generously provided, I propose that we use the Olson site (camp5) as our basecamp for the weekend of 10/13-16. Most of the other sites were either unknown or ruled out with the exception of scenic camp4, which is otherwise viable, but at risk of being too small for our group.

What do you guys think - should we make it official? :friday:

Thanks for the aerial image, Chris, and to everyone for the kind words.

This is a great place to have for a destination. There are a number of things to see and do, including just sit in the woods and listen to the crackle of the fire and the birds (with nothing else!).

For those who Geocache, there are a few interesting caches.

I've been here summer, fall and winter, and it's always been great.

Just in case there's any doubt, you will be at approximately 3280 feet at the campsite so plan on the temps at night being a bit cooler than you might expect for the lowlands in October. This is the highest county in WV. This is what we wore on those dates in 2004:

It got cooler at night but I was fine in my 30-degree F bag.

I went back through my pictures and everyone looked comfortable in typical fall wear for daytime.

Looks like I have an agreement with the family cooperative for a go on this one! It was touch and go there for a while as my son was opting for Dinosaur Land, but with that being a day trip we can do that the weekend before...and so; camp 5 looks fine to me.
We won't be there until Saturday afternoon, probably 5ish, just in time to set camp and fix some dinner. Some GPS coords would be helpful to find the right place. I think someone mentioned CB channel 4? Fine there too. Now I need those Geocache coords that Paul mentioned...

Canyon Rim Cache

There are undoubtedly more that can be located by searching for other caches near this one, including

There is no "I" in team...or ...group.

This has TRULY become a "Team/Group" Effort!!!:wings:

It really goes to show the caliber of members here!!!

It has been an exceptionally busy week for me, only having a minute here and a minute there to watch the progress of this outing. I must say...I am impressed!!!:clapsmile

There were entirely too few posts pertaining to this trip today ... one! :smilies27

While we're on the subject, I took off work on those days. Now I just have to find a place to ditch the boy, and I'm set!

Any reason not to bring him?

I'd love to, but we're not sure how well a long weekend in the woods would go with him. I'd really prefer if he was out of diapers before going on such a trip. Plus, to a feral badger, he is a tasty morsel. :)

Not to mention, someone has to keep mom company. She just got a new job last month and has no vacation time yet. :(
