exterior sealant

next step before the weather gets much cooler is to apply some 1/16" aluminum flat strips to the roof of my contractor cap. (yes; the one i could not even give away!)

i've had good luck with adhesion results using 3M VHB tape, just not sure of its waterproofing ability. i have found value in using the 3M adhesion promoter, too.

Q: can i use this instead of butyl rubber tape between the aluminum & cap sheathing (also aluminum)?

i will be replacing the self tapping factory screws with nutserts & truss head machine screws. these will go into the cross ribs of 1" x 1" aluminum tube that ARB used.

thanks

Make sure it’s UV stable or it will turn yellow. 3M makes 4000uv, not as strong as 5200

If you use 5200 the cap will not come off without damage, 4200 is a better option. Since you are using the caulking as a waterproofing and not depending on it as an adhesive, butyl tape or caulking may be better.
