Fairey Overdrive kicking out of gear - why?

While on the highway today in my Lightweight, the Fairey Overdrive kicked out of gear 2 or 3 times and put me into neutral. It easily went back into gear and I continued on my way.

Any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance for any pointers you can provide as I know just enough to be dangerous.

Could be the shift rod detent ball sticking, could be the syncro going bad, bad bearings, worn gears. If you're not comfortable with evaluating it yourself give George at Rovers Down South a call. He can give you some more specific tips or take your unit and overhaul it for you.

In the past I had two similar issues

one was worn gearbox mounts so the gear shift was'nt fully engaging and under load would pop out

The other was a worn selector which would also pop out

the first was a simple fix

the second a rebuild

Try tightening the grub screw that presses against the selector detent spring. There are two such grub screws in the casing, set either side of the selector shaft. The one with the shorter housing is there to prevent the shaft sliding excessively far, while the one with the longer housing is for the detent.
