Also, a 12mm JIS nut takes a 17mm wrench. How about a 11mm JIS? That would take a 16mm I think. Easiest thing would be the 11mm and 12mm go/no go trick with a spanner, though.

For any Japanese vehicle you only need the following common wrench sizes:

8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24, and 27mm

There are other larger ones but those are the ones that I use on the 'Cruisers. I have yet to find a bolt within that range that doesn't have one of those head sizes and is a factory bolt, and that's in over 20 years of wrenching on my Japanese vehicles.

A simple trick that MISF taught me for dealing with things like that. You probably already own the tools too.

Use open end wrenches. If both the 11mm wrench & the 12mm fits over the body of the studs, they're 11's. If only the 12mm wrench fits, they're 12's. So simple, yet never occured to me.

I will definitely try that thanks!! Probably need to clean a couple mm's of gunk of first though...

Seems like the OEM driveline bolts and nuts are 11mm on my FJ40. I know it was weird size I don't usually use working on the truck. The head is also small compared to the body, I assume for clearence.

So both 11mm and 12mm JIS nuts are 17mm? I don't remember that much about my old FJ40. It was a 12/78 production and I can't remember if the knuckle studs took at 17mm socket or not.

This is correct. The later 40s use 11mm. The heads can be either 12 or 14, but most I've seen are 14.

All of the knuckle stud nuts I have seen were 17mm. That includes the 11mm studs on the 76, and the 12mm studs on the FJ60 stuff I run now.

The new style Toyota 12mm studs are a thing of beauty, with a torx drive to assist seating them in the knuckle threads.

Just figured out what Kurt was asking me to measure. I'm a visual learner :Wow1:

11mm vs. 12mm Knuckle bolt pattern...

Yes sir... thats it. I have hundreds of "tech" photos I need to upload in order to compliment my ever-growing tech pages. Knuckle photos are a priority ;)

Use an USCS tape measure or a ruler, multiply by 25.4 and your golden

Really though, don't bother measuring the stud size, measure the pattern easier to differentiate between 55 & 46 than 12 & 11 :D

The bolt might be 11mm but I'd be almost willing to bet money that the head fits within the range of wrench sizes I've posted!

On my '76 FJ55 and the '82 BJ60 the driveshaft bolts are either 12mm or 14mm heads (there are both). The knuckle nut's on the studs were 17mm wrenches.

Chuck, when you do your knuckle rebuild be sure to get some anti-sieze lube. You will be very glad you did when you need to tear into them again next time. Coat the cone washers and studs liberally with the anti-sieze when installing.

Kurt and Charles,

Thanks for the tips. As soon as I get a free second I'm going to measure and post the results so that I can order the parts ASAP.

So I should be looking for approx. 1.96 in for the 12mm pattern, correct?

It looks like I'll need the Knuckle rebuild kit and the Front axle shim and gasket kit. Plus the knew knuckle if I decide to go that route.

Ok, finally got a chance to measure. From the center of the stud to the other length-wise I pulled 2 3/16 of an inch on my highly accurate tape measure. That translates to roughly to 55.37 mm. Which based off of the pictures in the link is the 79+ axle which makes me :wings:

Kurt I will probably call you on Thursday!!
