First Post: Intro and Guidance needed...

Chuck,

Not to burst your bubble here. But, I know you said you were from California. If you are coming back here on a permanent basis after your deployment, then the diesel may not be an option. The wonderful CA government and the all powerful CARB have regulated engine swaps. I know of a guy putting a diesel into an 80 up in LA. According to him, if we were to keep it in CA, it would have to be a green sticker vehicle only (meaning off-road). It wouldn't be considered street legal.

My only disclaimer, I personally have not talked to any smog referee or CARB people to confirm this. So, this is based from one person's information.

BluPaddler,

Thanks for the heads-up! I have done the research in this department...I ended up call CARB myself. In summary. You are probably right for an 80 series based on year. The rules in California are that the motor has to be of the same year or newer and and has to be from the same vehicle weight class or lower. That is why a 4bt and GM6.2/6.5 will not pass in CA. The 60 is considered a light duty suv if you will, and those motors are considered medium duty. That is why Luke at 4x4labs in pursuing the Merc Benz OM617 swap because it comes out of passenger car which falls below the light duty truck category. The only real issue with this motor is the tranny to motor adapter it has to be custom made. Also Jonathan at TLC in Van Vuys has told me that he can put the Iveco diesel in 85 or older cruiser. I guess theorectically you could use the VW 1.9 TDI if you really wanted to get crazy!!! There is lots of info on Mud about diesel conversions if you want to waste a lot time reading.

Update - It looks like I have acquired a daily driver/beater. I have my father convinced that he needs an LX470/UZJ100 :ylsmoke: , so when he finally decides to make the purchase I'm going to acquire his '93 Volvo 940 sedan with approximately 300,000 miles and still going strong!!!

If this all works out that means I'd probably lean more heavily toward the FJ60... just some food for thought.

...maybe in a few years I'll be receiving a 100 hand-me down

Chuck,

I own a 1996 80 series Cruiser. So far haven't really gotten into the heavy wheeling, but use the Cruiser for Upland Hunting/Expedition trips. Get an 80 for the long road trips to the wheeling events (think comfort). Then purchase a small car that gets 30-35 mpg for your daily driver. Try to find something you can be comfortable in so you don't dread using it everyday. This way you keep your Cruiser mileage down and preserve it for its intended purpose. Just a thought. That being said I've put on 19K miles on my 80 since June of last year.:) You see I drive alot for work and play, and drive approximately 50K-60K miles a year.
Buy an 80 for 10k-12K, another 5K on mods, then buy a good used car that gets 30-35 mpg for say 8K or less. Just another perspective....

G-man,

I agree the smart choice in the end will probably be either an 80 or possibly even a used 100. My wife's car already gets about 27mpg so I'm pretty much covered there.
I'm trying to convince myself that I need 2 cruisers (60 & 80/100), but my wallet says it can't support mods/gas on both... I think I have beater/DD lined up for virutally free so a low mileage 100 might the ticket. That would allow me to fix any mechanical/tune-up issues and start on the slippery slope to mods.

That's is actually one thing that I am keeping in the back of my mind. My wife has a special fondness for 55's as well!! And if its older than '75 then I can put whatever motor I want in it!!! :victory: :victory:

Chuck,

Your wife has good taste.:sunny: Listen to hear and get that 55. At present I have 4 trucks, cars, etc, and 3 trailers, if I had room I would love to have one sitting in my driveway too. Very classic ride.....

If I can find one that has less rust on it than my 60, I will seriously consider it!!

Chuck,

Better yet, just let me know about it.:arabia: Just kidding. I have to clear something out of the driveway before getting a 55.
