Yeah... He had never really even thought of selling it till we talked about it. After all the conversations we had and the time I spent looking at it, I am surprised he did not say anything. People... :(

That sucks.. The same thing happened to me this weekend. I had a gentleman's agreement with someone for a new DDer and same thing, she sold it out under me and wouldn't take a deposit with our agreement. I learned it is actually a good thing to give someone a couple hundred to hold onto a truck. But that said the same thing happened with the truck in Nebraska I mentioned, I gave the guy $300 to hold it but he got a higher immediate cash offer. But I actually didn't mind at all looking back at it...

Again that sucks though!

not to bust ball's, but if someone is selling something below market, and you know it, dont insult them by kicking the tires for 3 days. they want the money, not conversation. youre no better than the next guy. it aint up to them to call you when someone else wants to commit to buying it.

hand money holds a car for the time period agreed to, or all due diligence. if you say youll be back tomorrow, you better be back tomorrow.

i find its best to get rid of the confusion. i show up with cash and checkbook, negotiate the deal and close it at the notary with all due haste. know what you want and have all your ducks in order before you go-a-shopping.

i also like other guys that confuse trying to get the best deal, with not knowing if they can actually afford something. theres a difference between "willing to" pay and, "let me ask my wife if shell cosign a loan, will you hold it for 3 days" pay. if you aint got that worked out yet, dont call the addy.

...sez the world according to zimm....

It has been a long day but I want to clarify something here for my respected ExPo Brethren:

The truck was not "for sale" - he and I talked about it and he told that if my friend wanted it after seeing it this coming weekend, he would sell it. His words.

Not only does my friend have the cash - so do I - and he knows this. I did not even bicker about price. He picked it.

I appreciate your advice but it better suited for a different circumstance.

I am sorry for my friend as I have gotten her hopes up. :(

With my situation I'm bummed because I went down to take a look at it and she stood me up, and I had confirmed it with her the night before and even drove 45 minutes to look at it. Instead I ended up hanging out with Kurt Williams for night.. :) I think just kind of a wishy-washy type person. But agreed for what its worth...!

daily driver 60

I am a rpoud owner of a 86 fj60. I have used it as a daily driver in colorado for several years and 90k miles. However, I would recommend a 4 runner with like miles over the 60 series for highway friendlyness reasons. The 60 and 62 only reach a speed of 70mph or so and dont climb mtn highway hills very well. Also the 4 runner is more than likely going to be less likely to need work at the higher mileage. I love the 60 series, but Iwouldnt put my wife or sister in one daily in the situation you describe.

Schattenjager, sorry to hear about that. I had a similar situation happen to me buying a boat. Chances are the true condition of the vehicle reflects the morals of the owner -- you'll be better of without it. There is a Silver FJ60 (or 62, don't remember) for sale in Boulder near the corner of 9th and University. If you want I can get the phone number for you. I pass it on the way to/from work every day, but I haven't really looked at it.

:jumping: Thanks for the offer! If you don't mind... that would be mighty cool! I have not told my friend this LC is gone - it would be nice to have a plan B at the ready.

If you get the chance to gather any info - please PM me. I really appreciate the offer! If not - no worries.

62s I've driven are a little better on the highway. the trans has a lockup so it doesn't lose as much power and it has a decent overdrive. 3FEs also rev higher. They go 75 or faster even fairly easily if I remember correctly..

An ex friend of mine did this to me. He had even agreed to give me first right of refusal. Though this wasn't directly responsible for his being an ex-friend, I'm better off w/o both.

Good luck on the 62

I had a similar situation- went saw the truck-94zfjz locked 80 for 10k with 85thousand miles. I took one look under at the axles- stood up and said "ill take it". 7pm. Told him no banks were open- id go to my bank early in a.m. get a check cut and see him at 11a.m.

Take day off work- go to bank at 9am open. Sitting in bank-check cut- walk out- 2 messages on cell...... 9:20 -hey im showing it to someone else.
2cnd- 9:30 you never got back to me and i couldnt reach you....and its sold.

I called him- told him i took the day off work---was in the bank at 9am and have a check in hand at 9:40. He gives me some runaround blah blah.....and i say "you know-- thats just not good karma coming your way and probably to your kids" and i hang up the phone.

About 1mo. later i read in the paper--- his house(neighborhood) is on an old military site.....lots of leaking toxins...waste..children in neighborhood f;d up...every house in the area is for sale....and people are taking 150k losses.

I print out a picture of a Red Landcruiser--cut out the newspaper article--drive by his house and put it in his mailbox with a note......too bad about the cruiser--the house---and i hope your kids dont have to pay for your bad karma asswipe.

My guess--- he sold the cruiser to somebody for 1k more than i made the deal for....loses 150k on house---more k on medical bills and his daughters are probably growing hairy 3rd nipples by now......karmas a **********.

Funny, I daily drive an FJ60, but I think they did your friend a favor by selling the truck. FJ60s while reliable and simple beasts, require constant tinkering to keep them on the road. If your friend is not experienced with automotive repairs it would get expensive very fast. At high miles things are just wearing out and so the jobs just keep coming.

For instance, my FJ60 is in excellent condition, but in the last year, it's had a rebuilt carb, new catylist, new front brakes, new wiper linkage, new driver side upolstory etc. Just the parts are expensive, let alone the labor to have someone else do all the work. If your friend is an enthusiast, then the little jobs are fun and a chance to renew the Cruiser. If your friend just wants a daily driver, then all the little jobs would just get annoying.

FJ60s are total gas hogs. Even if her commute is short, 2 cold starts and a 10 mile drive each way will be nearly $10 per day in fuel, and that assumes she can get the carbed beast to start on a cold morning. FJ62s use even more fuel.

A much better choice, would be a late 90s 4Runner or Tacoma. Much better fuel economy, 10-15 years newer, better parts availability, fuel injected etc. Better yet, would be a 4 wheel drive car, like a Subaru. She'll want a vehicle that just starts and runs, not a cantankerous old warrior like an FJ60.

Not dissing FJ60s at all, I drive one every day.
