FJ80 refurbishments

I ain't hatin' or nothin', but they don't exactly say WHY they think the Range Rover is better off-road...

They mention something vague about size. I think comparing them stock the RRC has a better ride offroad since the stock 80 springs are a touch harsh. But yeah, the offroad ratings of MW don't really hold much credibility to me. I love seeing an FJ80 getting put through a slalom though. Haha. And 14 seconds to 60? I think my VW Thing outdid that! Haha. Honestly though, mine never felt THAT slow.

My progress is stalled, I tore my mountain bike apart and am rebuilding it and we just picked up a tandem mountain bike that I have been goofing around with....

issue is I am away from home so much that I have a hard time doing any sort of project on my junk

That ain't no easy job. Fun and straight-forward in terms of transmission conversion, but I bet there are MONTHS-worth of little here-and-theres that can make a perfect vehicle like yours turn into a never-ending project that you don't get to drive.

Honestly, I'd pay a good shop to do it. Get it done right and quick and be on the road where you want to be, not in the garage running back and forth to Ace to get the right thread pitch bolt. It costs $, but IMNSHO worth it.

Send your MTB and parts to me, I'll get it back to you in a few days.

x2... Plus I don't have the skills anyway. Combined with the V8 I think that would be just about the perfect 80. Even if the mileage is the same you'll have 100 more hp, right? What could be bad? :)

Not to belabor a point, but I learned a lesson the hard way and will not consider engine swaps in my future. The nickle & diming killed the fun with a thousand little cuts. I'm all about big tires, and lifts, and armor and fun electronic gadgets, but anything that modifies the direct engine-driver connection is out for me; I don't roll that way.

This is all over 'mud but I WOULD consider in an FJ80 doing a small body lift and putting a 2F block underneath. Anything more complicated than that seems to loose the appeal.

If you can weld or have a friend that can the 4x4 labs DIY bumper is cheap and has lots of options.

I plan to go that route when I do the rear bumper.

Since I am thinking of going 33x10.50 for my next set of tires I am considering sourcing a replacement spare tire carrier mechanism. Non sure how hard those are to find in working condition though.

Got the truck insured, plated and back on the road yesterday. Felt good being behind the wheel of it again. The spaciousness of the interior felt great after driving the Disco for so long. Man my BFG MTR's are noisy though! TJ at UP Autotech who is our UP Overland service provider is doing a few things on it for me before the weekend when we take it out for a scouting trip. Getting it back in it's natural element, the dirt! ;-)
