Mike,

I hear you, I have just read and I am trying to find the Spicer article that mentions that a sealed(non greasable) unit outperforms a greasable unit if the greasable unit is not serviced. Talks about the seals in the nongreasable being slightly better and obviously much lower chance of abrasives getting into the UJ.

I know what the conventional wisdom is regarding sealed vs. serviceable u-joints. Regardless, the driveshafts with sealed joints are well known for blowing up and the ones with serviceable u-joints don't.

For all I know, LR went to a cheaper u-joint when making the switch.

My point was that you claimed that it was a poor design when LR had the catalytic converters so close to the driveshaft. That same design worked just fine on the Discovery1.

Ok, I will concede, but I think the excess heat although not the primary cause for ujoint failure definitely accelerates ujoint failure.

Agree/disagree?

The heat definitely plays a factor in the failure of the D2 driveshafts. One big difference between the D2 and D1 is that the D2 shafts usually fail, whereas the D1s ujoints will vibrate giving warning before complete failure.

I just started developing a vibration between 25-50mph. A vibration at that speed that develops out of the blue is a tell tale sign of front driveshaft issues. I was given fair warning to deal with the issue, which I did. The D2's sealed ujoints don't.

You get a little bit of chirping and some grinding, but a lot of owners ignore the sounds. Soon thereafter you get a loud BANG, THUD, GUSH. Usually followed by ATF on the ground and the two transmission lights on your dash.
