Gen 2.5 Antenna Removal???

I would really like to just put a fixed height antenna on it.
scrap the damn auto retracting unit...
My motor still works, because I hear it every time I shut off the montero... but it does nothing except place load on my battery... the antenna is only half there, and doesn't retract.

It's pretty easy actually. You do have to get behind the plasic inner fender well. Just a few screws from what I recall reading re repairing the gen 2.5 setup. For that matter all montero's are setup like that.
can I use any standard, aftermarket antenna?
I am going to stop by the parts store on my way home, and try to find something that will work.

This is weird,biff. I have same truck and same issues Lol. My antenna is also broken. The stealer, ahem dealer wants $87 for a replacement mast. Screw that. I did a quick search on fleabay. I found a bunch for @ $20.
As for the fender liner removal to get to the antenna unit, I removed mine last weekend to run some wires for my Hella 700ffs. It is not that bad. 3-4 screws at the fender edge and like 6 or so plastic screws on the inside. For you, it will be easier as you have removed the running boards. Those hide 1 last screw.
However, you don't have to remove the power antenna motor assy., to replace the mast. You just remove the lock nut at the fender, power on the radio which activated the motor assy and pull the antenna out. Simply feed in the new antenna and power off the radio and it will retract the antenna. Just re-install the lock nut at the fender and you done.
But, if you want to install a different/ fixed unit, you will have to remove the inner fender liner.
I will be replacing the power mast on mine as I want to be able to retract the antenna and not have it permanently extended

excellent news.
I saw something similar to what you are saying on a montero sport forum... and I wasn't 100% sure if it applied to the Monteros.
I suppose I could do the replacement unit that retracts, but I just don't care for non-fixed antennas.
I guess I am a dork like that. :sombrero:

I don't think we are supposed to post ebay links here. Just search "mitsubishi montero antenna mast-sport" there is one @$19.99 free shipping. Just sort least expensive first. I bought an antenna mast from that seller for my mr2. Got it in a week.

As long as it has the same sized shaft width, I'd think so.
Forgot to add, you'll have to remove the wire and rethread it through to the radio.

Mine was broken for a while and I finally fixed it a couple of weeks ago. Ordered one on ebay and was absolutely delighted at the fast shipping and excellent, clear instructions. Search as suggested previously and you'll find them...they were in the upper midwest I believe.
IF the old antenna is still attached to the white plastic tail, you can just unscrew the bezel, pull out the antenna and slip in the new one. If, like mine, the white tail is broken off (and living inside the motor), then it's really only a small job to remove the rear part of the fender liner to access the motor. You do not need to remove the entire liner, and you do not need to remove the motor.
If I had another one to do right now it would take less than fifteen minutes.

My Gen 2.5 has had an aftermarket head unit installed by the previous owner. The antenna doesn't go up and down at all, it stays down.
Anyone know which wire behind the head unit is the control for the power antenna? I'm not sure if mine is plugged in or not --- the head unit does not have an antenna up/down switch.
Appreciate any suggestions on how to function check the power antenna. I'd like it to be able to go up and down. I have a spare one in case I need to change it, but the present power antenna seems to be being pulled down, it won't lift up and out of the bezel (yes, I removed the nut on the bezel).
