Got The French Press...

Most if not all the manual box style grinders including the Kyocera ceramic take about 200 turns of the crank to get ~3T for espresso :Wow1:.

There's gotta be a better way to grind beans while camping :coffee:

Frankly, the Zassenhaus is faster at hand crank speed than the water boil time, so I'm happy with the speed.

Now, if you wanted to go nuts, you could find a grinder that has a DC motor, and do some electrical modification to make it run on automotive DC instead of household AC. I have the Baratza Virtuoso and it has a DC motor. I wouldn't bother, but it certainly would be interesting to see it operate on the trail.

What a great thread...There are a few things that can make a person feel great while roughing it, like a great cup of coffee.:) well, maybe a good single malt too.
I have tried all sorts of things over the years, including boiling water with a campfire in an empty soup tin and mixing in the package of chase and sabourn instant coffee. I still have fond memories of the smokey flavour and burnt wood and ash floaty bits. lol.

I love my coffee, usually really strong, and admit that I frequently fall victim to Starbucks cappuccino.

I have an espresso and cap maker at home, but my favourite units for both travel and home use are my Brazilian french press and a Bialetti Moka Express Traditional Espresso Maker- both work mint on the trail, and the espresso maker doesn't require another pot to boil the water. As for grinding the beans (which is always my preferance, I even have a buddy that home roasts, which is really a treat) is a small bullet style plug in grinder. 10 seconds or so and you have a medium to coarse grind, and can adjust the time for powder style espresso grind when using dark roast beans. This unit works fine when camping in my truck, when used with my wired 400watt inverter. I know, I am lazy. lol.:ylsmoke:

The moment that I look forward to most every day is that first sip of coffee. You might imagine my frustration when I tried to boil water using a canister fuel stove below freezing the other day. It took me about 2 minutes to grind the beans and another 25 minutes for the water to boil. I was as nervous as a crack ho who couldn't get her fix.

Man, I need to figure out a better setup for winter camping. Of course, my Kelly Kettle and white gas stove were sitting at home.

Interesting idea! Might have to investigate this one. Now I wish I wouldn't have tossed the same grinder after it stopped working a few years ago...:(

For several years I have searched high and low for a 12V coffee grinder. Never found one. If any of you can help with a source, that would be great.

As for coffee, I have tried many - including pure Blue Mountain that I get in Jamaica. But the best I have found is also very reasonable. COSTCO sells a pure Sumatra dark roast and a Rwanda dark roast, both of which are really excellent. Even better is the price -- $13.95 for a 3 pound vacuum bag of beans.
