Quick update:

I found my Jeep! I traveled to Florida and drove back on Friday (through the rain). Took it to the deer lease Sunday and got it a little muddy.

2009 Rubicon, 6-speed, Garvin rack, Tuffy trunk, really great condition!

Thanks for all the advice. I'm very pleased!

I'll start a "build" thread once I start making changes. Right now, I just want to get the paperwork all complete and settle into deer season.

Congrats! Looks like a pretty clean slate, a good thing in a jeep.

I'm interested to see your plans. My build get very expensive much quicker than I expected. The stock stuff really doesn't handle bigger tires and heavy use well.

After my drive home, the mileage is just over 75K. The engine runs great. The owner added an Airraid intake, Magnaflow exhaust, and Jet chip. I'm not sure if any of that makes any difference in power or efficiency, but what the heck. If I add a snorkel down the line, the intake will need to go, but otherwise, it's set up well for my purposes.

Congratulations! The Jeep looks great. Let the adventures begin. I've had a few Jeeps over the years and must say that they become part of the family as time goes on.

I know that I am chiming in way late on this but I would have looked for a deal on a 2013. My 2013 Jeep JK Sahara MOAB was purchased new in July. What a great vehicle. On a recent trip to Florida and back, I averaged 19.8mpg with the 3.6L PentaStar and auto trans at 75mph. I've never been a fan of an auto transmission but a recent motorcycle accident and knee reconstruction has me thankful I bought the auto. It's a great transmission. The 3.6 engine is awesome. Smooth and powerful.

For Overlanding, I thought seriously about getting a Rubicon. Decided that I really didn't need it and bought the Sahara loaded with AEV equipment by Jeep. I also didn't need the Unlimited. They look long and heavy to me. My tire choice will be the stock Rubicon 255/75-17 BFGs mounted on AEV wheels, so the crappy 3.21 factory gears will keep my mileage in check as the DD. 3.55 may be an option later on but with the unlimited mileage warranty, I am hesitant to even do that. This is the last vehicle that I ever plan to purchase. If anything breaks, it's Jeep's baby and they give me a rental. I don't even have to change the oil. For $500 I got lifetime oil changes. All my accessories are purchased at my Jeep dealership and they install them. As a result, everything is covered by the unlimited warranty.

The JK is so much better than my previous rusted out a TJ that I have never looked back.

One VERY happy Jeep owner.

You're happy with your Jeep, and I'm happy with mine - that's the most important thing here. Yes, I could have bought a 2013 model, financed it, and after a while, started slowly adding on to it. Instead, I paid cash for a slightly older model with a few nice add-ons, and I can start customizing immediately as I see fit. At the end of the day, having considered all options, my situation worked out perfectly for me.

I don't plan on any long trips for the rest of the year, so I can save up some money for next year and hit the ground running. I do, however, need to figure out a better solution for rock sliders. The Jeep came with Warn sliders, which look nice and beefy, but are so close to the body, they are useless as a step. No problem for me, but my 5'2" wife begs to differ. I've been looking at all the options, and I'm completely overwhelmed by all the choices. I want something I can rely on for rocker protection and possible for use as a Hi-Lift jacking point, but has to be mounted low enough and wide enough so she isn't having to high-kick her way into the Jeep. My leanings right now, brand-wise, are Hanson, Rock Slide Engineering, Hy-Line, Teraflex, and Warrior. Basically, I need a step at or below the body line below the doors, and at least 3-4" wide.

Teraflex Aluminum Sliders

I have the Teraflex Aluminum sliders. I like the weight savings over the stock Rubicon rock rails. To date it is the only product that I have substituted and actually increased my payload. They have a good step for getting in and out of the Jeep as well as lashing things to the roof rack. Another big plus is they keep smaller vehicles from denting your doors. I had a set on my 07' and put another set on my 13'. The only negative is the installation includes drilling into the side of your Jeep's sheet metal. My 13' for reference below. Congrats on the Jeep purchase!

You could possibly get a set of used moab edition rock rails as well. They are basically the rubicon rails with an extra tube welded on the outside running full length.

The Rubicon has 4.10 gears, and I've never hit more than 18mpg on a highway trip, even keeping my speed down to 65. (I have a 2012 JKUR with 5 speed auto)

I love the 5 speed with the manual mode - works great for trailer towing.

orangeTJ,
Yes, the auto is great. It seems more user friendly that a manual because of the dual modes. The manual mode and Hill Descent works very well off-road as does the Traction Control. My MOAB has Trailer Sway Mitigation too. I recently bought an aluminum Schutt Industries military trailer to build into an off-road adventure trailer. I towed this trailer home from Delaware and hardly knew it was there. I love the auto! My Jeep is a 2-door, soft top with 3.21 gears. At 65mph I'm guessing that 21 to 23mpg would be possible.

goofiefoot,
I wasn't trying to second guess your purchased, even though it did sound like that. I'm older and getting the unlimited mileage warranty means a lot to me. This is the last vehicle that I will ever purchase. I also don't plan any big mods to my Jeep, just bolt-ons. It's about perfect the way it is. Sounds like you got just what you wanted. Not having a payment is a big plus. This is my first vehicle payment in many, many years. Good luck with your Jeep and post pictures of your mods. As a new first time JK owner, I'm totally converted. I love them!
