The cross rails on the factory racks are the weakest point. People who put tents on them say they break there first.

i suppose you can replace the cross rails with something else. I was more thinking of using the front to back portion of roof rack not the actual cross bars for support. make somethng that might clip into the rail system.

I have the z71 roof rack from a tahoe on my cap. I replaced the tiny bolts holding it down with M6 and am going to replace or add to the plastic with some steel to strengthen it then upgrade the cross mounts with steel.

Interesting thread. I can see the appeal of utilizing the Avalanche.

I'd start with a used (read "cheaper") Snug top and a used RTT, then cut a big ole trap door from the Snug thru to the RTT. That way you can utilize the thru way of the Avalanche wich is the whole advantage.

i like that very interesting for sure. a lass may be its time to ditch the av. looks like more option out there for a pu. I want a 4door pu with a flat bed. looks like you could modularize it easily and fit just about anything on it. Build your own side wall that are removable and put a camper on when you want it.

But I don't think ill be selling the av any time soon so this might be a bust. I may still toy with the idea and some scrap i have at home.

keep the good info coming this is not dead yet. ;)

You could always pull a small trailer with the AV. Advantages there are being able to set up and unhook and still be able to drive around. I'm still debaiting that myself, I went with a truck so I could carry a truck camper if I wanted to, but can't decide between the truck camper or a trailer.

A contractor I know has a Fuso flatbed with a puck up truck cmper on it. He built his own side walls and sided them to match the camoer, including tool boxes etc. I saw him use the Fuso for work on a Friday and had it cleaned up and cmaper mounted fiday afternoon, ready to roll. he is own th Fuso forum in Expo.

Ok, I didn't know thta part. Have you looked at the RTT's at all? they look like they setup as easy as popping the top in a popup camper, I don't think you mentioned why you didn't like that option.

i have but wanted to mount an AC and have some secure storage etc and if it rains a ten sucks roof top or not. done the pup thing was nice but a pain it you have to put i away wet and then open it up at home. Not to say this wont get wet but still better then a pup tent only a little around the sides.

also i like a hard roof and if the winds kick up etc its a little nicer inside.
the AV has the midgate so accessing storage gear etc from inside a camper shell would be nice and dry etc.

not to mention warmer if camping up north etc in the fall.

just some of my reasons for wanting hard sided camper on the truck.

you miss my point the fact that most of th ecamper will be hard walls with only alittle canvas for the roof section will be fine with me.

I've heard the campers with the popup top and soft sides like that are just as cold though. Thats one of the reasons I'm leaning back toward a trailer myself as I want to be able to park it on my farm in WV. I wonder how much the difference is.
