High Mileage?

There are no bulbs in the D2 dash, the fault indicators are all led's. The amount of douchebaggery that would go into disabling those was probably more work then fixing the problems.
If the dash binnacle is loose, it's probably been pulled to implement this douchebaggery.

That's true, they are LED's. Forgot about that. The douchebaggery could be as simple as putting electrical tape over the LED's. I've done that before.

That grey one in Miami looks really nice. No sunroofs, 16" wheels...

I am always amazed at how good some of those used car dealers can make these things look.

Haha! The dash binnacle was loose. Douchebaggery indeed!

I am passing on the grey one since it just didn't feel right. However I am considering in the back of my mind the second grey one I stopped next to that was the old lady's. Despite cosmetic issues, it ran better than all the others I have driven so far.

Going to check out this one today:

You're saying THIS grey one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Land...US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item336b662c3d#vi-content

doesn't feel right? It looks great anyway.

FYI, it is possible to remove the binnacle to perform douchebaggery and put it back so it is not loose. So the absence of a loose binnacle does not indicate the absence of douchebaggery. Just so you're not confused.

I was going to tell you, I woudln't hesitate to consider something with a few cosmetic issues for a truck you're going to take off-road. If the price is right, and you're just going to bang it up anyway, who cares? That being said, there's a pretty strong correlation (but not absolute!) where nice clean trucks tend to run well, and ugly trucks that have been neglected and are a POS.

No that one is AWESOME! I meant the 2000 in Craigslist did not feel right. I can't consider 2004s because of my budget. All I am looking at are 1999, 2000, and mid 2001 for CDL.

Lol on the douchebaggery explanation.

Well the 99' with cosmetic issues did not show any codes, and when I pressed the HDC the light turned on so I am guessing it worked? It had NO 3 Amigos by the way, and no lights on at the dash, but all worked when key was in ON position.

It drove the best out of what I have tested, however my only concern is that the lady has ran regular gas for the last 11 years and it got "hot" once.

OH MY GOD. I want. I'd so be willing to fly there and drive it back down. Anyone near to check it out for me? Also, why so cheap. Hmmm...

Its a numbers game. I thought all places had cheap used cars like DC, till I moved to UT. Many Many Many Rovers in the DC metro area, 99% of which have never even seen dirt, let alone driven on it.

Yeah but, no reserve on that nice grey 2004. I'd give it a shot.

Just check the bulbs when you turn the key off. Then if they go off, should be good.

The HDC should blink and ding if you push the button while in high range. Put the truck in low range, push the button, it should ding 3 times and the light stays on. Then it's working. You should be able to test the ABS and traction control on a slippery surface, rain, or gravel. But if the 3 amigos aren't on, the system should be working.

Yea I see that. Same here in the Coral Gables area. Soccer Moms upgrading their vehicles! Better for me haha.

It blinked and dinged when in High Range so I guess it was working. Can you imagine if I told the 62 year old lady, "Ma'am, can I go to this unpaved area, move this shifter that you have never seen before forward, and go up and down a hill while pressing a series of buttons on the truck and lights illuminating on the dash?"

I would still say seriously consider that car from ebay I linked. It is a 2004, but I have seen 2004's go for the price of 02s or 03s in the past.
They are identical in the area of parts and maintaining. So, the only difference might come in the upfront cost- the good news- an 04 will hold and in some cases go up in value verses the other years.

Just sayin'

Actually, they're better. The SLABS system is way less prone to BS 3-amigos faults than the earlier trucks. There's also the whole zeitgeist about later models have the "bugs worked out." Etc. Some claim the 4.6 is more likely to slip a liner, but I've not really seen any solid evidence of that. Just annecdotal evidence.

There's also the fact that a 2004 is 5 years newer than a 99. So it's 5 years newer. ;)

When you're talking about a couple grand difference in price, it's a no-brainer to me.

1. What's your Budget?
2. To RocketShip's point, you can find trucks in less than pristine condition(cosmetically)for cheap. I bought a 2004 with recently replaced engine and tcase(done by dealer) with 110k miles for a very low price - it has pinstriping and some dents. Just the truck alone is worth more than I paid. Add in the bumpers, sliders, snorkel, winch and it became a great deal.
3. There are a few rovers in NC. Check out Raleigh craigslist. More than happy to look any over for you

True that I have found 2004 DIIs for $8K here in Miami, but as a college student I don't know if I want a car payment at this time, because let's say I put $3000 down (what I sold my Jeep for) and keep $500 for emergency repair or something, that would leave around $5K to finance, IF I don't haggle the price down.

I did the calculations and the 2004 DII would come out to around $180 a month for 36 months with that down payment and everything (taxes, etc). Now, it is $180 a month, plus other Rover things like gasoline, preventive maintenance, etc.

Feasible? I would like an 04 DII, I'm just scared about the 4.6 failures that have recently been going around. Nothing sucks more than paying monthly for a paper weight lol.

How are you pricing the 04? The one we're talking about is a no-reserve auction, currently at about $1000. Just be patient grasshoppa.

Looking at around $4k for a budget. Will do on the NC Craigslist.

Sorry lol not pricing that specific one, just a general overview of what is in the area. Imagine if I bid and get it for $4k. Deal of the century! I wish though, but I will keep watching it.

The 04 is listed on Craigslist as well for $9,990: http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/cto/2579997025.html

A little steep for an 04 with that many miles maybe. Since Aerosynch told me he is not considering it, I am gonna go give it a look since I am in the market for one as well. Though I am still torn between getting a Disco 04 and having some cash left, or an early LR3. . We'll see.
