Wrapping up day 3 in the Bighorn Range of Wyoming

Well, the drive from Devils Tower to the Bighorns started out amazing. Beautiful landscape and perfect weather. Before getting to Buffalo, WY the scrub desert appeared pretty hard and it just made you daydream about wandering through it, with nothing in sight.

Leaving Buffalo, we realized it was getting pretty late in the day. The Bighorns weren't to far away, but we both started to get a little anxious. We had our USA truckers atlas, which wasn't that detailed, and cell/web reception was shoddy at best. We felt comfortable going into the mountains and camping wilderness style, but doing it in the dark was not going to be fun.

But it happened. The tiny entrance town into the Bighorns was pretty much asleep when we rolled through. It wasn't that late, but it was getting dark... fast. To top it off, the first handfull of miles were at a grade that my loaded 4runner with trailer did NOT appreciated. 3rd gear, 25-35 mph, white knuckled grip on the wheel with the hopes we would make it. What a rush... sort of.

Getting through the first grade took quite a while, and luckily, oh-so luckily, Michelle started noticing signs for a NFS campground. Woohoo! But where was it? Further into the mountains of course. We actually drove past it at first, but after realizing it, we turned around, in a corner, in the dark, and made it back. Took a tiny fire road down along a creekbed and half expecting to be greeted by death, the lights played upon a campground check-in post! We made!

After having our camp neighbors (who were impaired, likely stoned, and probably swingers) give us welcome firewood, we got the tent setup, soup in the pot, and some cheap whiskey in our bellies. What a day.

Day 4 - Bighorn Mountains, WY to Yellowstone, WY

And what a night! We had no idea what sort of temperature drop we were in for that night, but the frost all around us when we awoke drove home WHY we had slept so poorly...

But once the sun pulled over the beyond peaks and starting thawing everything, gosh what a site it was...

8606761448_6020c3c115.jpg

In our backyard was this amazing creek. How great would it be to just a pack a bag and follow it, not knowing where it would lead you...

8606764134_57dc087b6b_c.jpg

And what did you call it? Hamming it up? :) (Yes, I understand I could've made this work by adjusting my f-stop, but my fingers were numb)
"Look out Michelle, a bear!!!"

The sun came on hard as we struck camp, and it was a sign of a great day on great roads through a great state.

The drive through the Bighorns was amazing. Beautiful. Wild. No more steep grades once into the range, so it was relatively easy driving too.

Coming down out of the Bighorns on hwy. 16 was absolutely breathtaking. I look back at these images and STILL try to imagine going through this area before the roads. So rugged.

It's funny, because after we got out to Seattle and had been here a month or so, we ended up wandering through an antique. A pile of old landscape postcards yielded a few images that matched almost exactly where some of these pictures were taken!

Coming down out of the bighorns, more scrub. Quiet with blue skies, it made for a great morning.

As the air warmed and sun made the cab nice and cozy, Michelle and I realized we were starving. More importantly, coffee. Warm coffee. Fresh coffee.

The tiny town of Tensleep, just on the edge of the foothills, will forever be one of the best tiny towns I have been to. One of those single stoplight mainstreet sort of towns. We almost drove right through it when Michelle noticed a coffee shop/cafe. We pulled over and parked next to some horse stables whose residents were out sunning themselves. Walking into the cafe, the smell of fresh baked bagels wafted into our faces. The coffee wasn't anything but hot and strong, but the bagels. Oh my GOD the bagels. The owner was a sweet young gal, and was very welcoming, so we took our half dozen bagels and sat on the porch. What a breakfast.

The first birthday that Michelle celebrated as a Seattlite, I actually ended up tracking down this cafe. I found out the name of the owner, and gave her call. For a birthday gift, I ordered a dozen pesto bagels, the same type we had on that beautiful morning. The owner makes the pesto herself from basil grown in her mothers garden. I will happily sidetrack any cross-country travel to go to that cafe again.

And then we drank too much coffee...

And saw that the land was good for growing lettuce...

And it was beautiful.

Looks like a fun trip! A few years back we did a similar trip in reverse. We flew into Seattle, spent a couple days in Kent WA. with my daughter and grandkids then we hit the road for a little fishing and sightseeing.

Saw friends in Sandpoint ID. Stayed with my Ladyfriends college roommate in Kalispell Mt. WE went to Glacier, Yellowstone, Tetons, Flaming Gorge, Mesa Verde and lots of unplanned stops on the way back to AZ.

I noticed your McHenry Warrior T-Shirt in that photograph with your Grandmother! I graduated from McHenry HS. in 1972...HAHA..small world!!:coffeedrink:

Dangit!

Love the Bighorn basin....

Me too. I'm not sure when Michelle and I will be back that way, but I look forward to it...

That's awesome! Sounds like you saw some of what we saw, and a little more! Also, the McHenry shirt was a dear friends. We traded some t-shirts while on the cycling team in college, but I enjoyed the summer bike rides down and back from McHenry. I'll tell her it was recognized!

Keyboard is replaced, story will commence.

Bighorns to Yellowstone

Well I needn't remind you that we loved the Bighorns. Leaving them was just as beautiful. The rock formations and colors took me back to my childhood when I would become enthralled with the colors and scenery of the Old West films of yesteryear. On a horse with a blanket and some food. A dog along side named "dog" and pistol/rifle for hunting or for just-in-case moments. What a life.

A number of these pictures were taking while Michelle was driving and I was, in all my glory, practically hanging out the window clicking away. I took so many pictures, and so frequently, I had (still have?) the intention of stitching them together somehow and having a panorama comprised of a few dozen images. God's country indeed...

8605917657_9272555656.jpg

Michelle developed a pretty bad case of road rage because of this guy. He was definitely holding up traffic (not just us, though we were directly behind him), but because of oncoming traffic we weren't able to pull past him. An overloaded 22RE with a overloaded trailer didn't help our cause, but she still curses any little Datsun pickup were come across. I'm actually rather fond of the little buggers :)
