Hilux(s) Sighting - AZ

if I could get a diesel tacoma here in the states I would just about soil myself.

I *think* the reason diesels are restricted is relative to Tier IV EPA emissions requirements, something about total fleet emissions issues and how EPA judges diesel fuel and gasoline very similarly (when they are hardly similar). If anyone has more specific info I would love to see it, I just dont know accurately.

Although my question remains. Is the Hilux built in Mexico?

According to these quasi-credible sources,

Hiluxes are assembled/built in:

Argentina, "Hilux" for South/Central American market

Indonesia "Hilux Vigo" for Middle East market and Philippines market.

Thailand."Toyota Fortuner" and "Hilux Vigo" Thai and .

... and South Africa "Hilux" for European and African market

I'd bet that the ones seen in AZ were brought in on a boat to the port of Los Angeles then taken to the proving grounds.

The proving grounds would be a sweet place to work.

I think that Toyota doesn't sell diesels here because market studies indicate that there simply wouldn't be enough buyers for them to justify the cost... the price + importation tariffs would cost too much and there isn't the market to justify building them domestically in the US. The majority of Toyotas are high mileage, they could probably pretty easily follow regulations and sell grunty diesel rigs in the US if it was worth it, IE if there were the market for ~100K sales per year (guess based on Tundra sales)

It would be frickin sweet to get one like the LC70 has.

I believe that affirms my earlier statement then.

The Tacomas probably have a higher profit margin due to being built under NAFTA.
