How do you keep all those loose items sorted?

I'm dying to try one of those smittybilt GEAR seat covers.

Anyone tried one yet? I'd like to! I do fear however that the limited room between 1st and 2nd row seats will be even further limited by these however; this will leave the kids very little leg room. Regardless those raskals constantly kicking the front seats might have quite fun kicking all my valuables in those pockets?

I'm seriously thinking of getting a pair of them. I have a LWB rangie so there is plenty of room back there.

I use a drawer system, and Sears tool bags to keep order. In the trailer I have a kitchen 'chop box' with trays and drawers for storage of cooking/camping equipment.

Binoculars, digital camera and GPS ride on the dash with a cap and other stuff. The visor has a pocket for sunglasses, pens, etc. Sat phone and cell phone remain plugged in and ride in the center console. I have a leather map box for maps. Notebook goes in the driver's side door pocket.

It's not perfect, but I don't lose much stuff, and can find it when I need it.

Regarding seatback pockets, beware of 2 things if you ever carry passengers in back:

  1. They will leave garbage in your pockets
  2. They will cram the largest possible objects into your pockets without regard for damage. And then leave it there.

Unavoidable. No matter who rides with you, and how many times you frisk them, they will leave eleven super-pee-o-rama beverage cups, nine buick park avenue sedans, and a walrus inside your seatback pockets for every 5 minutes traveled.
That adds up on longer trips.

no walruses but I have had a few mantees left behind LOL!

I'm digging the SB Molle seat covers. Can;t find them on any sites to buy yet, has anyone found a vendor that sells them?

It also brought up the thought of having Molle panels that could be permanantly mounted to the ceiling or side panels with gear stowed in any molle compliant bag/pouch found in any surlus or tactical store. I am thinking it would be way cool to have the lions share of the small lightweight bits for camping etc, securely mounted to the ceiling in the back for quick access... Bags for tree straps, tow straps, winch controller, etc...

I see a few people have voiced interest in the Smitybuilt Seat Covers so I thought I would chime in...I bought them from 4wd and LOVE THEM!!!! Little concern on the fit, not really made for the RUBICON seats but overall work well. I also added a Med Kit on the Head Rest that covers the top.

Well, they will do that with or without seat pockets - they'll put that crap anywhere. Know what I mean?

You don't mean to suggest to not use these things because someone might insert some trash?

I've been intruigued by the Thule Go boxes ever since I saw them in the first issue of OJ.

Also, gate-mouthed tool bags can be used here too. If you need to close them up, then they zip closed. If you need to over-fill them, you can simply open them up for a large, rectangular storage bin similar to the Thule bags. You can also empty them and fold them up to get them out of your way.

Here's are a few examples:

Regarding the Smittybuilt seat covers. I notice that they're spec'd for Jeep seats only. Does anyone know if they'll fit other SUV's? They appear to use velcro tabs, so I think there's some wiggle room for fitting to other seats, but I wasn't sure. Also, the height might be a bigger concern vs. width.

Anyone used these on their vehicle?

One continual frustration I have when overlanding is containing all of those items you need ready access to. Jackets, camera, water bottles, all seem to end up on the floor or in a huge pile where I can't get at anything.

We've tried a net close to the ceiling to some success and a special rack, but there have to be other solutions.

What do you do to keep things tidy?

cheers

The perfect place for cameras, water bottles and jackets is on the floor where they're accessible. Unless, that is, you have a Jeep with a leaky roof seal like I do. In which case the floor is wet and...

Jackets: hanging behind seat backs.
Camera: tucked behind the center console.
Water bottles: on the floor.
Flashlight and leatherman: in drivers door pocket.
Electrical and camera doodads and binoculars: in center console.
Maps: in plastic map case tucked between front seats.
Wet stuff: draped over the roll bar.
Garbage: in supermarket bag somewhere out of reach and the rest on the floor.
Everything else: in a box or bag.

I'm mentally gearing up for a motorcycle trip - a first for me - which looks like its going to be a refreshing return to packing brutally light. No wet floor to worry about!

Cheers,
Graham

Hilarious! Of course, why don't we just say to hell with it and just embrace the mess? We'll be much better for it. :)
