more than one spare sometimes, right

i dont actually leave the rim at home, i only have 5 rims. that kinda went with the sombrero smiley you left out of the quote.

i dont bring it cause i just dont need it, when i bring the extra rubber i am loaded down and not travelling at speeds that a bent rim is a high risk. my main spare is a mounted tire on a rim, just like most folks. i also carry the tools to mount a tire on a rim, and sometimes carry a tube, is that stupid?

so, how many mounted spares do you carry? i sure hope its more than one if your gonna call someone stupid who also carries one mounted spare, let alone the extra stuff i carry.

Not a stupid idea at all.

I can envision at least several scenarios where carrying a dismounted tire or two, in addition to your regular rim mounted spare would be pretty convenient, versus the weight and rigidity of a couple of extra spares on rims would be enough of a pain in the butt that they'd get left home. With smaller vehicles, space and weight can't be taken forgranted.

so you are bringing more than one spare, right? right.

and for the second spare, you're saying you leave the rim at home, right? right.

why the hell would you NOT bring the rim if you're already bringing the tire?! are you trying to save 25lbs?

just to reiterate the first part of that sentEnce:

let me know if you need me to break it down from a 3rd-grade level to a kindergarten level.

What's with the attitude?

cobra, its pretty easy really, i carry tire irons and breaking a bead is easy through a few methods. i also run steel wheels on my main rig so the pic alex posted above is very unlikely to stop me should it ever happen.

check out this link, its been posted before but worth another link.

How do you mount a tire using the stuff you bought on the trail exactly? Thats pretty cool.
I used the tools and methods used here. http://www.adventuretrailers.com/tireclinic.html with one exception.
When getting the last bead off the first tire was kicking my butt. I was trying to pry it off with the irons and it was just getting tighter and tighter. At some point out of desperation I took the irons out and just pulled the rim up away from the tire and the thing just lifted out. The irons were holding it tight. Subsequent tires I just got the bead over for maybe a third of the way round gave it a good soaping and pulled it out by hand.
The vids are really quite good. I referred to them several times doing the first tire.

Very cool! Ive never seen anyone actually mount a tire on the trail like that; though Ive seen people do the lighter fluid remount trick.

I prefer to carry spare tyres on rims unless weight is really a big issue. For the simple reason that changing a wheel is a quick and easy job, whereas changing a tyre is a long and dirty job (in comparison).
