An opinion piece form High Country News about the 'trouble with monuments':

Yeah, love his Colorado-centric "opinion" of the fine people in Utah "Namely, a fair number of them think it's theirs, sometimes for the wrecking (most notably when it comes to riding OHVs roughshod over the landscape, or looting ancient cultural sites). "

But consider the source of HCN: Founded in 1970 by Tom Bell, a Wyoming "rancher" and environmentalist, also heavily involved in the Wyoming Outdoor Council which has only 1400 members so it uses litigation to impose their views on the non-believers

Here's a local reaction to the San Juan Islands entry in the possible Monument list
http://www.sanjuanislander.com/federal/ncls/national-monument.shtml
It is content with quoting the division chief of the NCLS.
In this one, a council man is concerned about more top-down regulations

Canada has already established a National Park Reserve in the adjacent Gulf Islands

Regarding national coverage of the issue, AP had story on Feb 23, which can found in various places on the web.
