I need ideas for vent to suck air out that installs on side of rig instead of top?

I want to install an energy efficient fan that can suck a ton of air out. I've read good things about the Fantastic Vent fans http://www.fantasticvent.com/products/products.html but I don't want holes on my roof. I was wondering if anyone had ideas for a fan I could buy or make myself that could be installed on the side of the vehicle (its a little Toyota Sunrader motorhome with the fiberglass body) instead of on the roof?

Thanks!

Thanks everyone! I could install this $105 Fantastic Vent fan http://www.amazon.com/Fan-Tastic-Ve...&qid=1374209999&sr=1-4&keywords=fantastic+fan on the back wall and make a cowling/cover out of epoxy and plywood with the opening facing down (obviously!). Then I saw this O2 Cool DC and/or D battery operated fan for only $19 http://www.amazon.com/O2Cool-NEW-Battery-Operate-Adapter/dp/B00ATSHMIQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top and this Vortex DC fan for $55 http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-High-V...qid=1374209399&sr=1-19&keywords=fantastic+fan and both have good reviews. I'm going to call them tomorrow to see how much DC juice they require and if they can suck and blow as much as a Fantastic Vent fan.

EDIT: I'm going to bail on the idea of using the O2Cool fan because the manufacturer doesn't even know how many CFM it is and someone else that has one told me it doesn't suck much air at all. And same goes for the Vortex fan too because its only 188 CFM compared to a whopping 900 CFM for the Fantastic Vent fan.

You could also pick up an electric radiator fan, from a small import. Cheap at the wrecking yard. There 12v, pull alot of air, and don't use that much juice. You couuld easily wire it into a 12v switch to power.

Can't believe I haven't tried this myself... Good idea and might work quite well.

I think I might just get one of these:

And a thermostat switch and rig something up..

Fantastic vent fans are good things. However, if you mount it in the side, recognize that the spinning blades will be exposed when the cover is opened. Otherwise, no downside, and less likely to make your roof leak.

Been interested in some options for this myself, but I'm looking to put it in a fiberglass truck topper.

Maybe something like this could be made to work:

Yes, thats the model I was thinking of but the manufacturer was closed by the time I could call them today with my questions.

Did you see my build? posts 9 and 12 show what I plan on doing for side vents.

Nice rig you're building there!

EXCELLENT IDEA!

Thanks for the link! That little radiator fan on eBay sucks 800 CFM compared to the Vortex High Velocity Fan at only 188 CFM and the Fantastic Vent fan at 900 CFM...and that eBay radiator fan is cheap!

P.S. I'm drooling all over my keyboard checking out your Jeep porn, er ah photos...

I think I need a bigger truck!
Fantastic fans are well...fantastic. The best part, they are not that loud on low and med. On high, they move a lot of air fast, but of course the price you pay is decibels.

The only issue I can see with an import rad fan is they are designed for high velocity air movement and not for low noise. It will likely be uber loud. Other than that it would be cheaps!!

I ordered one of these radiator fans, I'll let you know on the noise. I really just want to vent a lot of hot air quickly so this might be just what I need.

And is there any reason why you couldn't connect a rheostat type speed controller on that cheap eBay radiator fan to mellow out the sound for when you just want a gentle cross breeze?

Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate that people enjoy seeing the XV-JP and hope it will give them good ideas (like a Fantastic vent fan in the wall ;) ).
