I need my space

When MikeH came by to drop off the trailer, we spent a couple of minutes crawling around the Uber Cruiser. I was suprised to see that the 2nd row of seats were out.

In a 100 series, how hard is that to do? With those seats out, how long is the space from the back of the 1st row to the back hatch? I'm not thrilled with today's van choices, so the LC is looking pretty interesting.

Don't know how hard they are to get out on the 100, but the 80 is 4 bolts. I don't think its too much bigger than the 80. Someone should chime in if they can measure. Funny you mention this, im having Mike put them back in before we pick up the 80. That's where Dixie rides. Glad you're considering a LC.

Uber cruiser... lol

So, you better take a tape measure with you if nobody else answers first. The WB is the same on both, and the over all length is only about 5 inches more in the 100, so your number will provide a good reference.

Hi, Thom,

I'll send you an e-mail with some pictures, but the short answer is that the LC100 seats look to come out about as easily as the 80 seats, which is to say, pretty easy, except that the front bolts are hidden under the carpet whereas the bolts on Dave's 80 were hanging out in front of the carpet. If you were going to put them in and out often, a little carpet flap-making with an X-acto knife would be useful.

Obviously, the distance available behind the rear seats depends on where the front seats are positioned and their angle of recline. Measuring at floor level with the front seat all the way back, there's a bit over 78 inches available to the tailgate. Higher up, you'd lose a couple of inches to the seatback recline and the slope of the hatch glass.

And, in case you wonder, the hatch opening is 38 inches high.

Thanks. You wouldn't believe what I want to put back there. Watch for a post in the Bike forum this weekend...

You can put 2 maybe 3 mtn bikes back there if you make a fork mount platform and take the front wheel off. However, if i think i know you from your website... i bet your trying to fit a tandem in that thing!! :D

A tandom in a LC? Got to see that! I can get my bikes in the back of the 80 with just fold the second seats forward. But lately I have been considering using a trunk/hatch back rack on the rear window. Trying to find a good solution to get past the bumper rear tire mount.

Fully assembled, this tandem is 99" long. It won't fit in anything smaller than a van.

Happily, we won't transport it fully assembled. Those 6 polished rings on the main tubes are couplers. The bike breaks into small(ish) pieces. We brought it home in the Forester, but there was barely room for the Engel and our clothes. Strictly speaking, something bigger isn't required, but it would be easier to pack.

If I drop the front wheel and put it in at an angle, it might just fit. Otherwise, I can pull off the front end and it fits easy peasy.

More photos are on our web site.

Great timing on this topic. As I prepare to compete in the 2009 Nevada Trophy, I removed the back seat of my 80 series to fit some Pelican cases for equipment. I mounted the PullPal with Quick fists utilizing the stock seat bolts/holes.

The amount of usable space with the backseat removed is just huge.

I'll post more pics in the NVTR 2009 thread later.
