I dont really want to do a topper on it, as I cant have that on when Im home. In my experience they are a bear to put on and take off. I will keep an eye out on craigslist for one tho, if I found one cheap i wouldnt be against trying it out.
Not sure what your experience is but two adults can put on and take off pretty much any regular size topper out there, even heavy fiberglass models. Add another adult to be safe. As far as getting it connected, Leer toppers use the cool J-hooks that don't intrude into the bed space.
If you live or work on a farm, finding a place to store the topper shouldn't be much trouble. You can even store it outside, although inside storage would make it last longer.
Let me tell you, when it's 3 in the morning and the wind comes howling down the mountains, you'll be glad you have that nice, hard topper instead of a tent that might get blown over or have a tent pole snap. Ask me how I know that
Note that having a topper is also great for security - as in, you can go into town and know that your gear is locked in the topper, not sitting in the bed under a tarp.
If your truck is a common size for your area finding a used topper on CL should be easy. It may not be color matched, but so what? The most I ever paid for a topper was $300 (they cost around $1500 new.)
After that - decent tires, a good set of maps and a full tank of gas are all you need.
