Idea's for mounting spare to the roof..

Since I don't have the money to build a spare tire carrier, and my spare no longer fits in the well, i'm looking to mount it on the roof. I have a 1989 Suburban with the standard roof rack (not much there). I was thinking of strapping it down, but I dont think that will work all that well. Any idea's to do this on the cheap?

When I had a roof rack I mounted my tire there with a racheting strap. Never had an issue.

I strapped down a spare on the roof basket as well with a ratchet strap and it held fine. However, I never felt absolutely sure about it. Freeway speeds kept me glancing at the rear view mirror.

There are after-market spare tire carriers for roof top applications that should work out well.

I was also looking at a product from Black Widow of Australia called the 3-way Tyre Restraint Strap:

Simple, elegant. Here are some options via google:

I personally am not a fan of roof mounted spares. Spare off road tires are heavy! Putting one on the roof raises the center of gravity of the vehicle a good bit. I'm a big strapping guy but I'm getting older. I don't want to be lifting a heavy tire on and off the roof in the middle of nowhere. Eespecially not without help. Back country is not a good place to blow your back out while standing on top of the tailgate or tire trying to get that load on the roof. Just my .02

One of the reasons why I removed mine and mounted it under the bed where the stock spare normally goes. Luckily it allows for a 35" tire. I also removed the roof rack in order to keep everything, as your sig states, "KISS" principle. A lot easier if the better half needed to change a tire. She can easily remove the spare now. Rather than having to lift it off the roof and down to the ground.

2 cam buckle straps (the spring loaded kind, not the ratcheting kind) crossed over the tire in an "X" will be more than enough. Lace through a spoke with each one. It won't go anywhere unless you're doing MotoX jumps @ 100mph.

That said...I mounted a 33" spare on a roof rack once upon a time. I had to access it once. Never again will I put a 33" or larger on the roof - I'm a fairly big and strong guy, and it was still more of a hassle than it's worth if you actually have to access it (and put the flat one back up again).

It's too bad we don't all have 7" tires like the good ol' days...I'd love to mount my spare on the hood like you see on those old school safari trucks in Africa. :)
