As a collector, and owner of five IH trucks, all I can say is you obviously weren't looking in the right places. The only parts really hard to come by are body panels for the older ones and a few of the mechanical parts. Most commonly needed mechanical parts are available at your local parts store. IH outsourced just about everything they could, so many of the parts are the same as GM/Chrysler/AMC/Ford. Last time I repaird a steering column in one of my Scouts, the parts were on the shelf at the local Chevrolet dealer. But like said above, it was hard getting parts even in the 70's, must be impossible these days! I seem to remember the window crank handles breaking all the time!
What JP said. Parts are not that hard to find, just need to do the leg work to find the interchanges. A decent start, if still up, would be the interchange page on ORC's Scout page.......

A few years back I went to the Lincoln dealer for a part for a 10 year old Lincoln Mark VII. Unavailable, yet the car was only 10 years old? Says a lot for Ford customer support.
In the 70s IH was still making and selling light trucks. I can't imagine why you couldn't find parts. They would have been as close as your IH dealer.
