Imogene Pass Run

Has anyone done this race?

The Imogene Pass Run (IPR) is a 17.1 mile point-to-point mountain race within the western San Juan mountains of Colorado, run along a route which connects the towns of Ouray (7810 ft.) and Telluride (8820 ft.) by way of 13,120 foot Imogene Pass. The IPR is held on the first Saturday after the Labor Day holiday, at the seasonal transition from late Summer to early Fall. Mountain weather at this time is famously "squirrelly" (rapidly changeable), and participants through the years have encountered a variety of weather conditions ranging from virtually perfect to terrible. This spectrum of weather during the race is in fact part of its lure and mystique. In good weather years the challenge of the mountainous traverse is rewarded by unsurpassed vistas and no small feeling of accomplishment upon crossing the finish line. In bad weather years, the wind, fog, rain and/or snow along the course make the successful arrival in Telluride a virtual rite of passage into the realm of true mountain running.

I have done it several times in my jeep.

If you are considering it, be sure you go and drive it first. There are some sections that you would not easily walk up, much less run, and it is very steep in places. Beautiful though, good luck should you choose to do it.

Cheers

This is my second time going. I'm not a runner, nor am I terribly competitive; I (and my wife) was talked into it last time by my brother-in-law, and this time by my wife. It's been a few years, I didn't train at all, and now I'm wondering just how much am I going to regret it...

It is absolutely beautiful, but the times that some people do it in are insane! Plus, they're missing out on the view!

Anyway, was just wondering if there was anyone on the board who has done or is going to do it this year.

I did it! :wings:

4 hours, 50 minutes, but my knee bummed out about two miles from the summit. I ran (for the first time ever) the final few downhill miles, which eased my knee pain quite a bit.

We ran into a guy running it when we were up there last month. Absolutely nuts! I got winded just walking 50 yards uphill near the summit to help out a guy who's Xterra was running funny.

Congrats on making it, I can honestly say that is something I would never even attempt to do.

Thanks! :)

I actually said (and truly believed) the same thing, but then my wife decided she was going to do it and somehow I ended up joining her. I would never have joined her in a (half) marathon up to that point, so I still can't say why I did this. I still have no intention of doing a (half) marathon.

I do very much enjoy hiking, so that's part of it, but I still can't figure out why I agreed to go the first time, and it's even more of a mystery why I did it the second time.

Thanks guys!

My lungs never really gave out on me. Rather, I never noticed if they did because the knee was so painful. My quads did burn the next day, and now I have a pain in my foot which may be related to running too much too quickly in my Vibram Five Finger shoes.

The Imogene pass is one of those places that you should really spend several days just looking at, not running past, and I'd like to make time to go camping up there at some point.

If you think that Imogene run is intense, you ain't seen nothin'. Check out this Silverton-to-Silverton run http://hardrock100.com/

Myself, couldn't run more than a couple of hundred yards up those inclines, but the photography at that site and ones in the past is simply stunning.

Ugh. That looks insane. I'd like to be able to do something like that, just to know that I can, but... I don't think I'd like to do it. :)

Wow! I just ran Imogene pass (in my Jeep!) the Friday after Labor Day! (Sept 10th)

We stopped for coffee at around 1730 hours, just below the summit.

Kudos to anyone who has hiked/walked/ran this route!

The weather was great this year!
