Installing a Volvo Electric fan on a 3.5L Montero

A shrouded electric fan will move more cfm than any mechanical fan when the vehicle is at low speeds or a stop which is where its needed. it will work just fine.

Guess I get to take a trip to the junk yard with a measuring stick

I had the Ford Taurus electric fan on my 91. Do a Google search for Ford Taurus electric fan or the Lincoln Mark VIII there is tons of information.

Here's a link to start you off http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/show...ghlight=ford+taurus+electric+fan+tech+article
I'm looking for a Lincoln Mark VIII to replace the Volvo fan as it's to noisy. I don't know if it will fit in my 98, but we shall see.

Sorry to barge in but I'm not sold on this mod. Never had a problem with stock cooling system when it functions properly. Neither heard much from people in very extreme places like Australia outback/Africa etc. But IMHO overall surviveability decreases dramatically with this. This fan draws 30 amps when running meaning if alternator were to go even with excellent battery one will have maybe 30-40 minutes of driving time left. Compared to possibly hours with stock fan. Same goes for winching. One may end up with depleted battery after slow go in hot weather before you start nor it will get replenished as fast. More opportunities to fry you alternator. Mileage improvements... seriously?

Sorry again if I offend anyone but IMHO I don't feel like it's a best mod for long distance traveling, off bitten path rig. One good thing I guess is you can turn it off for water crossing.

I find this to be the best option for a hot area, with that being said in regards to Africa/Australia Monteros that do not have these, and do not overheat, the thing is that for the people in those areas this vehicle is more for transportation not for "crazy a** American stuff". Second the reason for doing this mod is because of how a clutch fan works, if you don't know, it works based on temp and speed of engine, so for normal driving even in extreme heat this is fine. However the second you start hitting it hard to get though mud or whatever, the fan quits spinning to give the engine back a little extra HP by removing drag. So by installing an electric fan you lose the potential for overheating. And just a real quick word of advise, since I have moved from Portland, OR I have learned one thing if you have only lived in the NW like me you learn how quick heat affects cars and equipment. I have had to do more work to my cars in the last two years in AZ then I ever did in the NW. The climate is so mild you never have to think about this stuff ever.

No problem. It's a very valid question.

To experience the overheating, try going up a steep grade in loose dirt (not even slipping) for ~5-10min while temps are +95f at <5-10mph @ 2-3Krpm then slow down as though there is 4x4 traffic ahead of you but keep moving up hill. You'll understand very quickly why this upgrade is very much desired.

At that speed/rpm the fan is turning too slowly and there is insufficient airflow to cool the coolant in the radiator plus your AT will be getting VERY HOT which will just add more heat to the radiator. I can almost guarantee you will overheat and quickly appreciate the benefits of an Electric Fan.

Alternatively if you stay on relatively level terrain (deserts, etc.) then you probably won't encounter this (unless it's August and you're in AZ).

I'd be careful comparing "crazy a** American stuff" to "every day" transportation need of OZ people in outback. There is not a single paved road to cross Australia east to west mind you that's area nearly same in size as continental United States with entire population barely half of that of California. I suspect their every day in outback maybe plenty extreme by US standard. Overheated broken car notwithstanding. I moved to Portland 4 years ago. I do know how viscous clutch works and no it doesn't give anything back to engine if it's in good working order. If you see it spinning slower than engine when hot you have a bad clutch time to replace/refill.
