Well, expectation levels have definitely changed over the years. That said, I have some old magazine articles from the 1980s that show images of an XJ towing a full bodied rally car (notch back Celica IIRC) on a full steel trailer.

Autos and unibodies are all old wives tale kind of things. Autos got a bad rap because GM made a crappy 4 speed auto in the late 1980s. Diesels in North America got a bad rap because GM made bad diesels in the 80s. Unibodies got a bad rap because... well, let's just blame it on GM as well. Kick the dog while it's down.

Like most things automotive, it's the nut behind the wheel that determines most of it. Although the Olds diesel and the 700R4 were quite the POS.

X2 and since I started pulling a trailer everywhere I go I think about it more and more. Amazing how the snappy little 4.0L can turn into such a dog when you hook an extra 1500 Lbs behind it.

x3 - Mine started going south right after we purchased a pop-up camper. I WISH I was only towing 1500lbs :Wow1: ...and up the passes here in CO...don't get me started :bigbossHL: The camper has been sitting on the side of my house for nearly a year now. I refuse to tow it again, but I still want the stroker now that my 4.0 is limping. :ylsmoke:

Probably has another couple hundred thousand to go!! :sombrero:

At least! My '99 XJ has about 155k on it and I've promised myself than if I still have it when it hits 250k I'm rebuilding the engine as a 4.6 stroker. So that is incentive to hang on to it and enjoy it.

I put mine to pasture at 275,000 then I pulled the motor and tranny and Im using it as the power plant in a rock crawler.:wings: So in a strange way it was nice to see the miles so I could justify the change. :smiley_drive:
