Jeep Blown oil cooler in Moab - Suggestions

72k miles. I had heard about the issue, and even thought about preemptive replacement, but other Stuff always felt more important at the time.

Of interest, there was very little warning and the leak did not appear to develop slowly over time. it was fast and seems large, although oil spreads out, so it might not really be large, except that it is going right on the exhaust.

I was able to rent a suitable replacement for a reasonable price this AM, so I’m just going to continue vacation and wait on amazon then do a middle of the night parts swap... I’m no stranger to that.

Thanks to those who PMd me. You’re always welcome to reach out if you have issues in central California, I’ll run to help.
I think this is a crapshoot.

Lots of anecdotal stories of multiple replacements even with the later gen replacement parts. I think the latest version is "E".

I too have thought about a pre-emptive replacement, but come back to the old "if it ain't broke don't fix it", especially since I still have warranty.

Anyhow, I wouldn't second guess the decision.

Glad to hear things are working out!

I rented from Jenn’s. The dude (John) was super chill and really helpful when he heard that I was already familiar with Jeeps and had young kids with me. He spent some time talking me through about 12 trail options, including a bunch of dirt roads that my friends along for the trip could handle in their van once they meet up with us. At this point, I recommend them if you’re looking to run trails out here and don’t already have that sort of rig.

Wow! Saga continues. Today was delivery day (was supposed to be), and I woke to 3” of wet snow with total flurries coming down and a semi truck crashed off the highway and almost into our hotel parking lot. Didn’t hit Jeep... would have solved a lot of problems... always park near highway...

So... I decided to attempt to avoid the work in the snow. I asked around and a guy with another Jeep in a parking lot pointed me to Rory at Moab Motorsports. He was pretty agreeable, and willing to work into the evening once my parts arrived. I was pretty agreeable, and told him I would trade a fat envelope of cash for not having to work all day in the cold and risk breaking something else...
UPS was NOT agreeable. At 3:45 they changed status from delivering today to ... maybe by Thursday night... you see... it is snowing, and even though we know that happens, and your part is checked in to the processing center in town, we just aren’t willing to deliver anything until after the holidays...

After screaming obscenities at some call center operator, I’m sure she didn’t really deserve it directly, but I was much nicer than my wife would have been... I found the UPS distribution garage in town, and a very agreeable dude who was clearly overwhelmed by a flood of packages. They were closed, and he couldn’t let me in, but listened to my issue and then performed a miracle! He found my brown box with amazon tape in what was probably 10,000 other brown boxes with amazon tape!

I hope 1000 blessings follow this dude into the new year!

Then second miracle... Rory was still willing to do the work! Tonight! So now I’m down the street drinking coffee and waiting on a more drive able rig!

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!

Assuming that Rory does good work tonight and is cool with it, I will post up his card and contact info later. He isn’t cutting me any deals, but I’m not asking for any. I understand the value of what he is providing.

3 hours done and done. These guys appear to have done a great job. Moab Motorsports. Rory Irish- 435-259-1109. He said they can be found on Facebook and at moabmotorsports.com

I’m super happy that they were willing to work late on New Years Eve to help a guy that probably won’t be a repeat customer. They do off-road recovery too, and had a pretty decent looking tow truck that was set up for trail duty.

Look them up if you ever have a problem here.

Glad to hear a happy ending, and definitely kudos to this Rory cat. Sounds like good people still roam the earth.

It’s a miracle the UPS guy searched for and found that package! Above and beyond his required job duties I’m pretty sure.

I looked at quite a few reviews reference that shop and specifically Rory after reading about your situation. I’ll be adding his phone number to my contacts list prior to getting back out that way.

I'm glad to know that Moab Motorsports works on Jeeps. I thought they were strictly an ATV, UTV, dirtbike, snowmobile shop. I believe that's how they started.

In full fairness and disclosure, a strange rattle going down I 70 alerted me to 2 stray bolts found on top of the body panel behind the hood seal. I’m not super concerned, as the rig ran a hard 14 hours back to LA and then 5 more north to Fresno, but I will be taking the engine part this weekend to find the forgotten bolt holes. I am pretty sure these are intended to hold a wiring harness bracket onto the intake, and they will be put in the right place.

I still feel like I got fair service at a decent price for a guy on a holiday night with California plates. I would return if I had a similar problem in the future.

And, he had several jeeps, some Toyota’s, and at least 3 or 4 rock-buggy style builds in the shop.
