Jerry can mounting, flat side down

Hello all! can anyone advise me as to weather or not the old style metal NATO jerry cans (new with new gaskets purchased before CARB regs.) will leak fuel if they are stored/carried on there side? I want mount two on my roof rack and if they will not leak mounting them on there flat side would lower their profile and keep the weight just a bit lower. I have tested my mounting system and it would work for me........ if they will not leak. what say? stay safe, mjmcdowell

I ran two Nato cans on their sides for years in a rack on top of my Tacoma. Used a rubber mat under them and a rachet strap to hold them down. Never had a single problem. In the pix you can see I used herculiner on them as well.
