Jerry cans - New Law

From the article:
"Chances are you have a gas can in your garage, but you may not know the danger it poses. "

No, actually my cans are stored in my lawn mower shed, at least 40 feet away from my house, in a locked flammables locker. I know the dangers and don't need the nanny government to take care of me. Thank you very much.

I know not many have an actual flam locker. I got mine when they were remodeling one of our plants at work. It was too "dull and ugly", so they bought new ones and let about 4 of them go to associates.

It's not hard to keep things out of reach of kids, though. My firearms are locked up, too.

With my kids, they have been taught "old school". They have had their own firearms since 10 and know how to safely handle them and the responsibility that goes with having a firearm. It is my responsibility to see that they are safe. They are allowed many risks, too. I do not overbear on them, I teach them.

Anyhow, the whole gas can thing is yet more government oppression to protect the stupid from allowing things to get in the way of proper parenting.

It's not just the "gas can" industry that is getting the shaft this year.

I design hot tubs for a living and congress tacked on a bill to and energy bill that unintentionally wipes out 90% of the portable spa industry even though we have had a very clean record since regulations came out in 1986. You get one high ranking official who has his grand daughter die in a 30 yr old inground spa and you've got regulations that make it almost impossible to follow. It is tragic that this girl died, but to take down a whole industry because a parent left their kid alone in a hot tub is irresponsible on so many levels. We've got options so we will end up just fine and are customers will remain happy, but I know of several firms that this is the last straw for them.

Sorry for the government intervention, making us live in padded rooms, soap box. Go back to your previously programmed gas can rant.:)

I guess everyone can feel good now that big brother has made fuel cans safe for children to play around.

Good gravy, doesn't the government have a little more to worry about than gas cans? Seriously, a group of people were sitting in a room talking about the safety hazards of a gas can. Rome is burning, but it isn't fueled by my gas cans that's for sure.

You mean we got to rush out and buy a spa, too? What bill was that?

Yes and I'll give you a screaming deal. My goal is to get Adventure Trailers to install one on one of their next trailer designs. Everyone with thier roof top tents...imagine a roof top hot tub!

Reality, no.

Government may be retarded, and though the CPSC hasn't given a ruling on the petition for change, I still have faith hot tubs will be available and as safe as they have been for the past 20 years. The new law goes into affect Dec. 19th. We were supposed to have a ruling last friday, but there is still no word. It would be foolish in this economic time period to willy nilly shut an industry that provides tens of thousands of jobs accross the country.

Congress passed the Virginia Gram Baker act in late 2007 citing new ASTM testing for entrapment. No one anticipated the derating of suction grills to 20% of what they have been rated at for the last 20 years, including the board that wrote the standard. In all honesty I would be supprised if any congressman read it. It was attached as pork to an energy bill that was being pushed through. Even if they had read it, I have full faith that very few of them would have understood what it was talking about.

If the CPSC doesn't resolve the problems with the ruling, all 60k spas sitting in showrooms accross the country will have to be returned to their manufacturer for plumbing changes. Including shipping that could run from $500-$2000 per unit with some spas being impossible to retrofit. The problem is that local building inspectors(yes you are supposed to have one to install a hot tub) are reading the new rule totally wrong and telling spa service companies all over the country to shut down privately owned spas already in the field. Yep they want to come into your home and turn off your big bowl of hot water. :yikes:

off of the spa rant, after reading the VGB act for pool and spas i don't think any congressman knew what he was voting for with a ban on these Scepter cans. They were just blindly following California on Carb issues.

Tell me it aint so... Mine is outdoors and portable, I had to have the electrical inspected, but they didn't want to inspect the spa installation. Hope it stays that way.

Now I can see making storing flammable liquids in a house or connecting structure when children are present illegal.

I can see the local states attorney prosecuting theses parents for child endangerment for allowing the children to play in the garage.

I can see this guys insurance company raising his rates for storing gasoline in the garage.

But requiring all fuel containers to be child proof makes no sense to me. They don't require childproof containers for bleach and hundreds of other hazardous household chemicals.

Absolutely amazes me, how easily our freedom and liberty is tossed aside and how rarely personal responsibility is promoted.
