JK Habitat No Longer in Production?

Does it even have access from inside? Its looks kinda like a giant rooftop tent more than a poptop camper. I suppose the stand-up area and inside access could still be through the back seat similar to the Ursa Minor's and through a hatch in the ceiling / floor.

Also looks like they used the rubber hood hold-downs with a pair per side - I would want something more solid and lockable - wouldn't want that flipping back on the highway at 70 mph! Maybe a set of the same latches used on the JK hood that lock?

Still a nice idea and looks well executed.

A plus for us as we might need to stow some Kayaks up there some day.

The issue with it folding to the back is that anything attached to the top would hang down when it is opened up and would potentially hit you in the head - so items such as kayak saddles or rollers would need to be removed each time you set up camp.

With the J180 design where it opened over the hood that isn't an issue. Of course, with the angled type pop-top version (such as the J30) you don't even need to remove the kayaks to sleep - which is what I would want for late night pull-over type camping and napping. Of course you loose the ability to sleep four people though... but the JKU isn't ideal for travel with four people anyways since it has limited cargo space and load ratings.

Wonder if they will make an angled pop-top version? Probably not...

bummer

The whole purpose in going to this other than the j30 is access from the inside. Late night pee breaks, raining snowy etc. I really wanted something with access from the inside and standing room like the tacoma got. Am i missing something?

I agree - perhaps the Gazell from France will be available - it allows access to the bed from inside in the extended back section. You give up some departure angle and the top sleeps only two.

I did notice that on the Gazell website ( www.gazell.fr ) when you select your country by clicking on the american flag at the top if takes you to EarthCrusier's website... humm

I think the original JK Habitat was made so that you could enter using the back seat but the fabrication process was so unique that they were basically having to hand build them each and every time, thus the cost was still relatively high.

I believe that this version of the habitat does not require a new hardtop like the old style, thus you basically install it like a roof top tent onto a rack of some sort.

This is where I am out of knowledge, what rack is being used in the pictures? AT/Mario, can you shed some light on this? What racks will be compatible with the new habitat? Seems like a front runner type flat rack has been used in the pictures but hard to tell.

I don't think you can beat the size of sleeping area that you get from this setup. I have a family of 4 with 2 younger kids that love being outside thus the extra room up top would be ideal on a rainy day or family game night!

I did get an email back from Nemo stating that they have continued to supply AT with their tent products so that is good....seen some great quality come out of Nemo.

I agree with the fact that you would have to take down kayaks/bikes, etc but personally I think that I would be willing to make the concession for the room. Plus with a roof top tent that sleeps 3-4 you don't have ANY space on the roof rack even if you wanted to.

I have a built up Tentraxt that we use for storage/water, etc so that solves most of my storage issues so the random time that I just want to throw a bike on top of the tent without taking the Tentrax would be absolutely ideal.

Anyone else have anymore thoughts on the new version of the habitat?

To answer a few questions.

AT builds the roof rack

We are working on access to the camper through the vehicle, but it will impact the sleeping area and increase the cost.

The Vehicle Habitat will sleep two people at each end, so a 4 person RTT

Weight is 240 lbs

It fits directly to the stock JK roof

This unit can fit any number of vehicles, either direct to the roof using brackets, on a roof rack, or to the rain gutters.

The product has not been officially released yet, we think the price will be in the region of $6500.00

The A pillar supports definitely look like they are from a front runner rack - but the whole thing sits lower on the roof (probably because they don't plan on removing the two front freedom roof panels when the poptop camper is mounted on there). I suspect it mounts like a front runner rack but doesn't actually use a rack - it is the rack itself.

Sorry, we are not using Front Runner supports. The Habitat can be fixed to a roof rack and depending on the height of the towers the Freedom top panels could be removed. The set up as seen in the pictures could also be raised up for access to the panels, so many ways to achieve whatever you want.

Does that mean it can also be mounted to open over the front of the Jeep?

I have a roof tent now and one of the best things is to be able to use at the beach or other parking lots.

Though I understand the benefits of opening over the rear, I'd get more use out of it if it opened the other way.

And if it could do either that's better still.

No plans to having the tent open over the front.

How are those supports attached to the tub in back, Martyn?
Can you open/close the gate with the supports deployed?

Looks like I'd be hitting my head on it in back...
