JK-Headlight Replacement Options?

I just want to point out that the Rigids are a good offroad light but are NOT a foglight. The light goes every which way and is dangerous to use on-road.

True. I got the "Driving" pattern which is a little more focusedand as a rule, won't be leaving them on for normal driving. I needed something amber to counter the LED headlights as we get a LOT of fog here (I can walk across the street and down to the Potomac). The temp difference between the river and the air is what causes the fog bank to settle in.

There's a 3.5" amber IPF foglight from JDM-land that I'd like to try, if I can only get some specs on the mounting tabs. They identical to what the Wrangler has.

I´d suggest a "real" foglight, like the 6045 or 6050 (just different mounting) from J.W.Speaker.

On a side note: Over here in Europe the Rigids aren´t legal to use onroad, since they are not "E-marked" - the J.W.Speaker fogs are. Nevertheless, you´re allowed to run the Rigids (or non-E-marked Vision-X or other brands) as "work lights" when you´re not on a public street and when they have a seperate switch and don´t light automatically together with your driving lights. Yeah, sounds strange, but that´s Europe ;-)

the 6045 isn't amber, elst I'd have them on the Jeep now.

Here's a typical morning (my daily driver has PIAA amber bulbs swapped in to help out a bit against the HID's)

Hella makes good foglights that have a real foglight pattern.
While selective yellow color (not amber!) has been shown to have some advantages at some time, it's not a necessary ingredient to seeing well.
Here's just one of many, the Micro DE: http://www.rallylights.com/Hella_DE_Projector_Fog_Lamps_for_Integral_Installation.aspx
There are others ----

I tinted the lenses of a pair of lights to selective yellow and the results were very good. There's a link in this article by Dan Stern on how to do it.

I had Micro DE's on a previous vehicle....good stuff indeed. I also went to great lengths on my Subaru to get Osram All-Weather bulbs from Europe; they were selective yellow. :)

Bet you could make these fit a JK.

Put these bulbs in:

I ran these bulbs in a couple of vehicles; they're awesome.

Or these bulbs if you have to have yellow:

They are NOT as bright as the others I linked. You can't make a bulb brighter with a filter.

The higher-than-stock bulbs would likely need to be relayed to work; but, if you really really want foglights that work, it would be worth it.

Dan Stern has some old-new Marchals that he'd sell to somebody that appreciates them, jeff...

Not that I'm trying to temp you or anything.

I bought these about 4 years ago from Daniel and they have been the best lamps
I've ever run. Price is a little steep but its really a matter of you get what you pay for
with these. No regrets.

Have always run these bulbs and never get flashed. But I'm sure I've freaked out
some people by pulling up to close to the rear of their low cars at stop lights. :Wow1:

Osram's 85/80W ultra high efficacy H4 bulb, produces 2400/1750 lumens and requires the use of upgraded wiring with relays.
I replace them about once a year. Very happy with their service life

Drool.

That's the headlight-porn I was talking about.

I took a couple of pics on a back road tonight, with a heavy fog in the air (almost rain). I haven't spent much time aligning them yet and the pics show some time is needed.

I'm running the Hella 7" e-codes with the osram hypers, 100/95? cant remember,, I just picked up a new pair from rally lights. They are 30 minutes from my house. I stop in every now and then. I have one of the first JK kits they made. While I do have some issues as its best to let your jk run a minute in extreme cold before turning the lights on with the higher wattage lights.. Seams the JK alt/regulator is made to run up higher under extreme cold and recharge faster under start up, down in 25 F and under. Will let voltage go over 15, sometimes to 15.9 this will pop a high volt h4 if turned on at -5F.. ask me how I know.. I went through many sets of lights.. Rally lights.com are great people and are very helpful.. The guy that builds the harnesses on onsite and you can talk to him if you need to.. I have stopped in and chatted with him many times.. They just moved out of a historic building to a newer nicer building..( I liked the old building as it was one of the origional Fleetwood body plants-Cadillac- early 1900's). The new building is way easier to get to.. I just looked at those new projector lights.. the way it goes from high to low is neat.. but a bit ugly.. May still do it.. if I could do a plasic cover that makes it less obvious to whats going on.. and maybe a led halo DRL in that unused area so it has the BMW look.. just so its not so .. "boobie looking"? My wifes term actually..

The headlights in my JK are incredibly bad. So far its looking like the hella H4's and bulbs are going to be the way to go. Anyone have experience with this setup with stock wattage bulbs?

A harness would be in the works for sure. Did that with my previous XJ and it was a big improvement.

Look at my shoot-out; I used standard wattage Philips Xtreme Power bulbs and the LUX was nearly identical at the markers as the over-wattage Osrams in the Cibies.
The Philips bulbs have a superior filament and better focus overall.

Had it and loved it. It they hadn't broken/cracked I wouldn't have replaced them.

That's what we did with Miss Rubi, my wife's JKUR. http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...12-Jeep-Rubicon-Unlimited?highlight=miss+rubi

After consulting with Bill about H4 bulbs that are legal, we used the recommended Philips 67/60W X-Treme Vision. We're pleased with the results.
