JKU Tire Opinions?

If you're going to be in mud much, and still sticking with an AT tire, i'd go with the duratracs. I recently changed to 285/75/16 Duratracs, and am very happy with their off road performance so far. Though it does take a bit of wheel spin to clear them, they do not clog up nearly as much as say a BFG AT, which become slicks pretty quickly. I do have one tire that I think is out of round, which is worth mentioning, because I've read quite a few reports about this issue with this tire. Going to be in contact with DT about this soon. I'm not totally confident in their sidewall strength, but so far so good.

So real world...

Stock KMs 255/75/17 = ~30.25"
BFG KO2s 34x10.5r17 = ~32.44"
ST MAXXs 255/80/17 = ~32.50"
GY DURATRACs 285/70/17 = ????"

Anyone have real life height of Duratracs in 285/70/17? In the meantime, I'll search this forum and some jeep forums...

I have that size Duratrac on my truck, they have an insane amount of miles on them and measure 31 inches.

According to Tirerack.com Duratrac 32.8 which when I measured to recalibrate speedometer is pretty much what I came up with as well on an 8.5 inch wide rim.

I am in MA, if you want to come take a look at the cooper tires or swap them on your truck for a test drive let me know. They only have 600 miles on them so they are pretty much brand new.

My old BFG KOs in 285/70/17 were 31.5 inches new for what its worth.

You might see of you can put a pair of the Coopers next to the BFG 34s. When I looked at them the Coopers in 255/80/17 were only 32".....oh the vagaries of real tire sizes. Kind of crazy.

Anyway, good luck!

Duratracs with 10k miles, 31 7/8 inches.

The tirerack specs can be deceiving as that is usually unmounted and max inflation.

And I'm 20 minutes from him...

Can line a few up at a time....

In my opinion, there is no perfect tire. And I was very unhappy with the DuraTracs in the mud.

I've been toying with a set of mud tires on another set of rims for playtime....

Thank you all! I appreciate all the feedback and comments...but I hate decisions...

Think I've narrowed it down to:

BFG KO2s in 34x10.5r17 or the ST MAXX in 255/80r17

Main reason I am down to these two from my original list, besides the many positive comments, is the per tire weight. KO2 = ~55lbs and the ST MAXX = ~52lbs from what I have gathered. The other tires I was looking at all seem to be over 60lbs. Stock KMs are 47lbs.

I had it down to these two tires as well. Both seem durable and capable for offroading. And importantly for me, neither requires the use of spacers.

Around me the Coopers were significantly less expensive than the BFGs. I was leaning ST MAXX anyways, but the price difference made it easy.

Checking in from Boston. I run the ST-Maxx in 255/80/17 on my JKU that has a 2.5" OME lift and absolutely love them.

35psi for daily driving and go down to 18psi when I leave pavement. This is a great, strong tire that has never failed me.

Really would be neat if they made an article comparing the KO2s vs ST MAXXs considering how similar their reputations are as arguably the two best ATs on the market. Comparing the prices (stock 255/75/17) ST MAXXs are a whole $40 cheaper tire, that's $200 of savings to spend towards other goodies. However, everything I hear is that the Coopers are way heavier. I can't compare offroad and on road since I have no experience with them (I did run KOs at one point and loved them). Just something to consider since I am in the market for tires to replace my KMs next summer
