I bought a JLUR. Did I NEED one, probably not. Luckily I don't have much debt, no kids, two incomes, etc. I will say for safety, starting a family as someone else pointed out it's a no brainer. It all comes down to what percent of your income you want to spend on your vehicle. For me it's an investment for long term. I put 7k on odometer first year (I live really close to work). I plan on buying wife a new car and drive hers as DD into the ground once jeep is paid off. Jeep will be our "toy" car.
Our goal was to buy and build something over next few years that we plan to own for the long haul. We are very picky with mods and only have been slowly adding top quality parts. As a daily driver for a longer distance I might have bought a taco/truck instead or something that rides better. I have a 2" lift and ended up going 35s for now, but again set myself with space to do 37s if I want. When I move back out to CO down the line I might go to 37s, but 35s will get me anywhere I should be going in a car worth that much as a daily driver (for right now at least).
The difference between the JL and JK is pretty substantial. Rubicon you can throw 35s on without a lift. They are more future proof with technology and safety features. Driving the JK and then driving the JL I am 100% a JL fan.
My decisions were all made for the long term. Its a substantial investment but for me it was worth it. If you have any specific questions PM me
