John Bull Trail, Big Bear California

I along with two friends had hear that the John Bull Trail was one of the toughest trails in the Big Bear, California area. This past summer we had tried to take it but were turned around by crowds of 4x4’s waiting in line where the more difficult part started.

We decided we wanted to try before the snow closed the trail. What we found was a trail all to ourselves and anywhere from 1’ to 18” of snow covering most the trail. You know it really doesn’t look all that tough covered with snow! The holes are filled and the rocks don’t look quite so difficult. It adds some additional fun (spelled challenge) when you can’t exactly see what’s if front of you until your tires actually make contact.

It was truly beautiful and the sun came out to warm our cold hands. Finding the trail was only difficult in a few places and we all made it through. I think getting traction in the snow and ice was more of a challenge then the actual obstacles.

It was interesting that some of the more difficult sections as described by the trail book became easier and some of the easier sections presented a greater challenge. One challenge was keeping the vehicle on the trail when it slanted off to one side. The snow and ice was thick enough that the vehicle tended to slide sideways off the trail.

This movie is just after the first more difficult part, once we cleared the larger boulders it took all my power to climb up the ice and snow in a section that is usually a “cake walk”.
