PIPELINE THREATENS UNIQUENESS OF THE BIG BEND
The Big Bend is the last frontier of Texas. It is where people come to breathe clean air and escape from the lights, noise, crowding, and pollution prevalent in other parts of the state. It is where people come to enjoy the freedom of wild, open spaces and the splendor of the natural world.
Now the uniqueness of the Big Bend—that complex of attributes that make it special—is being threatened by a massive (high-volume, high pressure) natural gas pipeline that is slated to run through the region to supply natural gas to Mexico as part of their energy reform. It is one of two such pipelines to extend from a hub near Coyanosa, Texas to the Mexican border intended to fuel power plants and industrial factories. While Mexico’s desire for cheap natural gas is understandable, the Big Bend Conservation Alliance feels this is incompatible with the traditional values of the region and disregards the incredible significance of the Big Bend’s natural and cultural resources.
The pipeline sets a dangerous precedent in a place that has remained largely untouched by the industrial trappings of modern society, increasing the likelihood of oil and gas exploration or additional infrastructure. The pipeline will also impact the landscape, plants, wildlife, and archaeological sites the region is famous for. Pipeline compressor stations could threaten the health, safety, and quality-of-life of Big Bend residents with air pollution, noise pollution, light pollution, and risks of leaks or explosions that could cause catastrophic wildfires. In addition, the pipeline could impact tourism that is central to the Big Bend economy.
As one of the last unspoiled places in Texas, the Big Bend cannot be sacrificed for Mexico’s energy future.
For these reasons, the Big Bend Conservation Alliance has launched a petition drive asking President Obama not to issue the required permit for this international pipeline. We have until May 5th to garner 100,000 signatures - the minimum required to reach his desk.
