Yup - it is super duper fast.

I had it hooked up and moved about 400 photos on Monday. Got the network setup Monday night.

To say it is brand new is no exaggeration.

We sell these units here at caltape and they're great little portables. I have a 500 gb big disk extreme at home and love the speed of firewire 800. It's the only way to go for video editing.

For sure, the 800 Mbps Firewire is nice. One thing to keep in mind, I think the bus powered LaCie drives use 5400 RPM HDDs. So they aren't going to really test the bandwidth of IEEE 1394b and might not be the best option for video editing.

Yeah, I have a LaCie 400GB Firewire external, running a 7200GB Seagate HDD. But it's not bus powered, it has a 57W external supply. Most bus powered stuff (i.e., it gets it's power through the USB or Firewire cable) is limited to around 5~7W per port and 7200RPM drives eat up about 25% power power than a similar 5400 RPM. Drives are getting better, so it's only a matter of time before 7200 RPM 2.5" drives get their power consumption down. But AFAIK this drive is a 5400 RPM one.

You know, I have no idea how fast the drive RPM's are. I can tell you that file transfers are noticeably quicker on the LaCie FW800 with no power than the Western Digital USB 2.0 powered unit I had. But my life is not so busy that I can't spare a few nanoseconds... :)
