Limb risers on Forest Fire Service Dodge Power Wagon

I came across this pic I took at the 2008 Country Living Fair at Batsto, NJ. Our Forest Fire Service always has some sort of display at these type events, and I thought a handfull of ExPo members might appreciate the limb risers on this truck. "Home" for this truck is the NJ Pine Barrens. Plenty of overgrown fire roads, trees leaning across the road, etc.

OK, I just really like this truck, and wanted to share :sombrero:

OMGosh I grew up there! Basto is the place they made cannon balls in the Civil War. I could take my 10' flatbottom from my house on the Mullica river in Sweetwater to the Basto river and right up to Basto village. I also rode my BMX bike all over that place because it has grass instead of sand. I bet I jumped my bike off the porch of the Basto mansion a thousand times! The Pine Barrens have hundreds miles of trails and great spots to camp and swim in the rivers. Deep sand can be a problem so go prepaired.
Those tree rails look like great protection. The only way I have ever seen somthing like that done befor is by running small cables from the front brush guard to the roof rack. A cable on each side does a great job lifting branches over your roof rack and saves your windshield wipers too.

Small world...

Did you know the Sweetwater Casino burned down? Right to the ground, in the middle of the night. The souvenir shop next door is still up, and I think they still rent slips on the river. Our wedding reception was there 15 tears (er...years) ago...so much for that anniversary dinner plan.

I have not been through the mansion tour yet. I should make that a priority.

The mansion at Atsion was just finished being refurbished this summer, I need to get to that one too.

Had you canoed the Mullica from Atsion to Batsto? I try to every couple of years, camping at the "boats only" campsite.

Ahh, the Pines.

It sure couldn't hurt...but given the terrain and understory growth in parts of this area, limb risers make more sense. Otherwise all the fire trucks would be designed with hose deflectors.:)

Too cool! If you stand on the gas dock at the Sweetwater casino then my house was the last one you could see up river. My sister got married there also! I used to Jump my bikes off of the gas dock into the water while my Step mom was tending bar. My dad played his saxophone at the restaurant and we were part of the whole small town family. As far as canoe. I worked for the Mullica River Boat Basin and one of my jobs was delivering canoes and picking them up from all the spots in the woods. I was a skinny lightweight kid so my 10" flat bottom with a Johnson 6 could go almost all the water ways the canoes ran. I pulled many a drunk caners back to their drop off point when the were to tired to fight the tide. I was 10-19 when I lived there and pulling canoes for a few beers was a daily ritual. Probably why I'm 15 years clean and sober today! A few facts about the area believe it or not is that the highest concentration of white tail deer in the world live there and the single cleanest river on the entire east coast of the USA is the Mullica river. It looks like ice tea but it's super clean spring feed water that is well isolated and protected in the Pine Barrens. I heard about the Casino burning and also heard they made the whole river a No Wake Zone. I guess my dream to go back and water ski the whole river again is gone too. What a great place.

What a beautiful rig! I love those old Power Wagons, and that is nicely restored. Thanks for the pic.

Another one

More Forest Fire Service truck pics. This one was at the Pinelands Jamboree at Wells Mills Park in Ocean Township (Waretown), NJ yesterday...

It's a Dodge W300 I think...with tubular steel limb risers (again)
