Limb Risers...

I'm looking to fashion up some limb risers for my Pathy. I've already got the airline cables, the length adjustment doohickeys, and the eye-hooks.

I just want to see some pictures of how everyone secured them to their trucks. I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out how I'm going to attach them to my TJM.

Most that I have seen, attach to the top of the bull bar corners, such as on an ARB, and extend to a roof mounted rack. I am sure you could also attach to the body/roof with the correct type of hardware.

You might check over with the Land Rover fellas - they have an easy time using welded tabs on the brush bar and fixing the cable to the roof rack.

when we did the 05' 4 Runner, we drilled holes in both the roof rack and the arb bullbar. we then used a nutsert tool into insert the nuts into the bullbar and roof rack. we then threaded eyes into the inserted nuts and routed the cables from eye to eye.

One important consideration with limb risers is that they need to be fairly tight. It's easy to get a solid mounting point on a bullbar like an ARB, but it's a bit tougher on the rack side with many products.

Be sure that your rack can handle the extra strain of the wire plus any tree limbs that may be put on it (plus the usual load of the rack).

Let's get this thread back on track. I ordered my limb risers from WildYoats (dont think he makes the kits anymore) and he sent me all the pieces and he hunted down the black cable instead of silver or clear. My INTI rack already had limb riser tabs on it so i was good there... and all i did was loop it through the ARB bullbar and crimp it instead of welding a new tab to my nicely finished ARB powder coated bumper. They've been working great for nearly a year now. Used em once lol

These are pics from my cameraphone.. but you get the idea..

Is a turnbuckle appropriate to keep the cable tight?

I did this on my rack when I built it. I have tons of limbs on the trails I go on, so the limb risers will be extremely beneficial.

those loops look too far back to run from the front bumper? also you want them out near the edges or limbs will fall off the cables as they ride up and land on your roof!

James, im not trying to get off track here, but you only have 4 bolts holding that rack on your shell? And isn't the shell fiberglass? That thing will hold weight?

The picture is kind of decieving, the hoops are actually 17 inches above the roof line and will easily reach my bumper (when it gets built that is...) I am building a tube bumper that will have "eyebrow" type headlight protection and it will come up slightly above the hood. As far as them not being on the outside edge... well I had to go to the highest point, which is where they are. If I went to the outer corner, then my lights would catch the bulk of the limbs, plus it would'nt reach the bumper from being too low. One thing that sucks about an extended cab.

The bolts holding the rack... its plenty strong enough for what I do, no need for overkill. If I can lift it, itll hold it.
The below is copy and pasted from my "build up thread" here http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5416

"It is suprising to me at just how secure it is in its current state with the 1/2 (13mm actually) inch bolts. The fiberglass on those corners is a full 3/8" thick, which supprised me as well. I was up there walking around on it just a couple days ago without any movement or problems. I weighed 304 pounds (as of this morning :eatchicke ), and I had my spare tire in my hands (65-75 lbs?) so it was close to 400 pounds with out any problem. I think with that being said it is plenty "strong" enough. I agree with you about the rubber washers, thats a great idea. I have large fender washers on the inside, but didnt want to put them on the outside (not sure why? I could have painted them as well....still may do this). The legs are "capped" on the back side so, the load on the outside portion is somewhat spread out, as apposed to just having the "edges" of the tubing resting on the fiberglass.

I had initially planned on building an internal cage for supporting the rack, but got lazy, especially after seeing how well it works without anything.

The rack has been up there for a couple months now with a few wheeling trips and no signs of cracking gelcoat or spidering."

Sorry to get off track guys, just showing what I am doing for limb risers...
