Looking at getting into a LR3...maybe

Some thoughts: if you want to take off-road I think most folks on this site will tell you you want the 18" wheels to give you better tire choice (really any tire choice). This will force a review of $600 in rims against HSE upgrades. I got a 2008 LR3 HSE w/ 70k miles for I think $21k. I've had for almost 9 months and I love it. Gas mileage sucks; if that concerns you along with putting in super gas get something else. It's a beast. I'm replacing rims as I must replace tires anyway (Note getting BFG at ko2s) and taking off-road this summer.

The truck is not for the faint of heart, but every item I found wrong with it (misc warning issues, bottoming out overnight, coolant sensor fault, tire fault, air leaks) I was able to diagnosis using this site and fixed most myself for what 1 trip to dealer would have cost.

It's a great vehicle to drive, 4 sit like kings and the trucks drives great on the highway or the city. My added Johnson rods which I bought used for $80 and installed in 15 minutes give me a nice lift on the road.

Good luck

I was planning on running a second set of wheels and tires during the winter. Street tires will not work once hunting season starts, mud, ice, snow, etc. Still on the hunt for one with the H-D package....those are hard to find. Everyone seems to think they have "every" package until I ask them to verify the locker and then it turns out they don't.

Honestly I don't think you'll need the HD package. The traction control stuff (terrain response in LR3 speak) works amazingly well. Unless you really push the truck hard you'll be fine w/o the rear locker. Of course if you CAN find one then by all means, but I wouldn't make it a 'must have' based on what you described for use.

I was just told the same thing about the HD package from another member. I have found one with the HD package and complete service history that I am seriously considering, but if it doesn't work out, I will start searching for a non HD package. I have taken everyone's inputs and really put them to use when searching for the right truck and I am searching nation wide for a truck.

Non HD package are very capable in itself. If you can find one with the HD package then you have one extremely capable vehicle. Will you need the rear lockers? It depends on what type of terrain your in. Having the HD package will make the obstacle a little bit better to navigate.

I didn't really think of it. They just replaced the front lower control arm bushings, torsion bars, and all 4 struts.

Torsion bars? on a land rover? I don't think so.

What the hell happened to that key?!

Take it directly to a Land Rover specialist to do a once-over checking everything. You need to know if anything is urgent or preventable.

Looks good!

Ball joints...

I don't know what happened to the key but it is on my list of things to do. I'll probably take it to Cannibal for a look over.

That key will cost you $$$$ to replace out of pocket, unless you buy a shell from eBay and do a hack job.

The key is a good introduction to Land Rover ownership. That was my first repair job on mine - mine was worn through and then the battery wouldn't charge.
New key from dealer: $300-$400.
Empty key shell on ebay: $8. There are good write-ups for swapping out the guts of the key fob into a new case, soldering in a new battery, and you are good for another 10 yrs.
Looks like a nice vehicle - and you scored the HD package and 18-in wheels. Good luck and fun trails!
