Looking into an LR3-what should I look for?

Anyone have the factory literature from 05? It might mention the Trail Package in the options section. If it's factory (and sounds like it may have been in 05 at least) it should have a code on the build sheet-kind of like option Z-71 at GM.

Too bad LR didn't put some huge graphics on each flank-they could have found a whole new audience!

Still thinking it over-that the dealer is 100 miles away is something to consider if the vehicle has remaining warranty or an extended one. Not a deal breaker but something to consider.

So the coils didn't add to the off road ability of the LR3. I would think it would but I guess the air suspension is that good-is it troublesome as the earlier RR's are?

No, they definitely do not add capability over anything but dunes or wide open baja style terrain. In most off road conditions, the reduced range of motion (articulation), and fixed height/center of gravity of the coiler is not an advantage over the remarkably long travel capabilities of the EAS. The normal EAS equipped LR3 has over 13" of articulation, can be boosted over 5" above standard ride height (in Super Extended Mode), and with the cross-linked air system, functions more like a beam axle rather than independent suspension (when one wheel is pushed up, the other is pushed down).

In Baja style terrain, or dunes, the ability to go fast on fixed coils is nice. In a normal LR3, the EAS lowers itself down to standard ride height above 30mph. This greatly frustrates the Australians in the Outback, with hundreds and hundreds of miles of 2-track roads where the want to cover ground quickly and need a bit more height than standard ride height. This is one of the reasons LR offers the coiler overseas. It also has the benefit of simple durability, and D3's (LR3's) pressed into service for expedition travel are commonly equipped with the coil option for this reason. For example: http://www.geoland.be/photos/index.html

But given the choice, I'd go with the air suspension for the type of use I would subject it too.

So all the Land Rovers and Jags at Jacksonville Port dont have window sticks on them? Wow I must be seeing things then.

If my truck was a dealer pack than they went deep to cover it up. Even had the Land Rover NA rep cover for them at the 2010 launch I was at.

Trail Package was 05' only and on bare bone V8 SE's only. Only a few 100 of them so slim pickings. A clean LR3 with the rear locker is a good find,, just do the firmware update Itold you about and the rear locker won't cause trouble. I bought the 25th ARB bullbumper sold in the US when I got my truck. I miss it alot, really good rig.

Heres my LR3 pre ARB

Just got off the phone with my friend at LR and the Trail Package was a factory pachage, no doubt about it. It came from England with the HD package, 18in wheels from a V6 LR3, and the badge. At port they added the A-frame, lights, and rear light guards. The window stickers are printed at the factory and shipped on the vehicle. The trail package was listed in the factory installed packages and options.

Thats offical from Land Rover North America.

I remain sceptical. There were only 27 coilers, and many people have heard of them. If there were 100 Trail Edition models running around, you'd think more people would be aware of them. Presumbably neither are overtly labled or stickered one way or the other on the actual vehicle itself, yet the existance of the coilers is well known, and I personally know the whereabouts of at least 6 of them (across the country).

More importantly, the entire concept of a "Trail Edition" seems to fly in the face of what Land Rover's marketing is all about. It presumes that some Land Rovers are not trail worthy, but others are. They've spent billions of dollars over the years to argue a directly contrary point of view. It just seems odd to me. Yes, I know about the RRC Hunter edition, and the Disco XD, the Disco Kalahari, the P38 Borrego, the Tomb Raider, the Trek's, the G4's, The Nevada Passage, etc.... All of these have verious themes and options to enhance the off road image of the brand, but not at the expense of the regular units. And I'm not convinced the factory's issue the window stickers. I think they don't. I think the pricing shown the windows is dealer set, based on local market factors. Even the prices for options vary from region to region based on similar threads I've read on Edmonds in the past, and I can't recall ever seeing stickers in the windows of cars on transport trucks. There may have been, but I can't recall ever seeing any. I remain a sceptic. But my opinion does not matter in the slightest.

Prices are the same accross the US. Prices are set by home office in England for whatever they believe the market can bare and the stickers are printed at the factory with the dealer info already on them and the pricing set with all packages and options set. I am pretty sure its illeagal for a dealer to reprint the window sticker atleast in Alabama and Florida, not 100% but close. When you drive a pre-PDI'ed (post delivery inspected) truck it has the window sticker in it. They have it in it at port, and when you see them going down the road on a hauler you see the stickers in them.

The Trail Package would help in sales by showing people a kitted out unit ready to go. Its not like they labeled it asTrail Rated or something similar. It was the Trail Package. Meaning that, its a package that adds the features, not a only this one can go off-road package.

The 05-06 Lr3's need a firmware update forthe traanny and rear diff. Its $200 to get done by the dealer. The tranny will shift hard and the rear diff will slip in and out of lock in reverse so its hs to get done.

I'm with Woods about the sticker printing. The dealers will often add things like blingy wheels from local vendors that have to be disclosed for the sale. I'm also pretty sure I remember there being a printer specifically for these said stickers when I worked for a Ford Dealership.

None of this matters though, because I don't think anyone is upset with you for having a "Trail Package". Official or not it doesn't change the fact that you have it. I for one am jealous I didn't get the add-ons.

Hmm... Is there an easy way of knowing if I need it? Part of me thinks I might be experiencing this, but I'm not positive. Thanks for the info, btw.

Ask at the dealer. Or pay for the online pass to the TSB's and shop manuals. Check the TSB for it see if you fall into the VIN

I think that you guys might be talking about two different stickers. Not that this topic needs another opinion but there is a factory window sticker that has the factory set prices and details and then the dealer will add a second sticker with their added extras. I've seen dealers that use a sticker that looks very much like the factory sticker but it maybe a little smaller.

The one exception to this (in the south east anyway) are Toyota's. When Toyota entered the USA market in the 50's they allowed the distributors to set option, delivery and similar charges. The SE distributor (Jim Moran) has maintained the distributorship the whole time so the SE gets to pay more for options and delivery than any other area of the country.

I avoid this buy never buying new cars so if the sticker is still with the vehicle by the time I get it, it is a minor miracle.

Of course I've never worked for a dealer or car company in any way so my information can, and probably is totally flawed but I own a series Land Rover so the odds of me being very, very flawed are quite high.

If your curious what amount of wealth that being a Toyota distributor in the SE USA can get you-google Jim Moran-Gallant Lady and take a look at his mega yacht which is the 12th one he's had built.
