LR3: 270 Awnings on cross bars?

Hello,

I currently have a 2005 LR3 that has crossbars. The crossbars, I use occasionally for mounting a roof top box that we use on family trips.

A friend of mine, with a GX470, showed me his 270 OVS awning and I immediately wanted one as it would be useful for me not just in camping trips, but for so many other activities as well.

My question is, is there a way to mount a 270 awning to cross bars safely without having to invest in one of those $1200+ roof racks?

Thanks! Looked it up and did some research. It seems those mounts are used for lighter side awnings... Was wondering if anyone has used something similar for heavier 270 awnings.

Just a thought, will the 72lb OVS 270 plus the weight of your roof box be above the safe working load of your roof bars?

I think that of you think that both together will be safe, then I’d probably take a rhino mount as a template and have someone make a stronger version for me.
