If the OP has been looking at buying an XJ, the additional maintenance probably isn't a big concern to him.The engine wouldn't be my concern. It'd be everything else. Ball joints, u joints. CVs, etc etc. Nothing major, but Potential for additional maintenance

As recent XJ to Toyota convert myself I'll throw a couple thoughts out... the 4Runner is a slightly more complicated beast. One of the appeals of the XJ is just how cheap and easy upgrades can be. With the XJ you are getting a solid front axle with inverted Y steering. 4runner has IFS and rack and pinion. Which one suits your needs... offroad capability or road manners? Also a much easier pill to swallow when it comes to cutting fenders on the XJ and hacking off parts... if that is a path you are considering. Which arw you more comfortable to work on? Both are solid vehicles, I think the decision comes down to choosing the XJ for simplicity and capability, or the 4runner for comfort and convenience.
