The engine wouldn't be my concern. It'd be everything else. Ball joints, u joints. CVs, etc etc. Nothing major, but Potential for additional maintenance

If the OP has been looking at buying an XJ, the additional maintenance probably isn't a big concern to him.

As recent XJ to Toyota convert myself I'll throw a couple thoughts out... the 4Runner is a slightly more complicated beast. One of the appeals of the XJ is just how cheap and easy upgrades can be. With the XJ you are getting a solid front axle with inverted Y steering. 4runner has IFS and rack and pinion. Which one suits your needs... offroad capability or road manners? Also a much easier pill to swallow when it comes to cutting fenders on the XJ and hacking off parts... if that is a path you are considering. Which arw you more comfortable to work on? Both are solid vehicles, I think the decision comes down to choosing the XJ for simplicity and capability, or the 4runner for comfort and convenience.

This was definitely a major point of hesistation for me.

The unfortunate truth is the truck will spend more than 99% of its miles on pavement.

I'm viewing it tomorrow; if there are any discrepancies in what I see vs what I've been told, I'll walk away

I've done it before

I very reluctantly had to pass on this; at no fault of the truck, something else came up

Here is the ad if anyone else is looking

If you have him send additional pics of the frame and such i thing you will like what you see. He's been very pleasant to deal with so far; I've got no reason to think he's less than honest.
