Traveling Alone

here's to speedy recovery!

this is a good wake up call to the solo travelers..

Do you think you would have attempted something like this if you were alone with the ATV?

I do a lot of solo trips, I carry both my SARSAT beacon and a SPOT tracker in Tracker mode when alone. My wife know that if the Tracker stays in one spot very long most likely I'm down and unable to activate the alarm call. With that said I have on several occations talked myself out of a climb, trail, obstacle or some other less than safe travel when I've been alone, and to answer your question, no, I wouldn't have done the Hell's Gate if I was alone.

At least I still have some common sense!!

Thanks,
Fred

I've done Hell's Gate several times in my XJs. I just can not imagine trying that on such a short wheelbase vehicle. :Wow1:

Glad to hear you're feeling better Fred. I'm not too far from you. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Glad you're okay. At least you are here to tell the story.

I know we arent here to critique the emergency personnel, but Im begging to ask the question... Why didnt they take c-spine precautions and apply a c-collar and hold your head/neck still UNTIL you were secured to a backboard?

That's a damn good question BUT.... Not all EMS personell are created equal and frankly some get way too wrapped up in the moment and just forget procedure... Being an EMT-P/W-EMT/FF/EMS worker for quite a long time I can say that I too have gotten wrapped up in a very hectic situation and done things out of order... Plus I'd have to see the MOI (Mechanism Of Injury)and specific situation to see if extrication was more pressing then C-spine imobilization. Getting him on a back board if someone is holding C-spine IS full C-spine precautions so... A "chunk check" can tell you if someone has specific point tenderness nad truly needs spinal precaustions as a FIRST measure. Hell, most of the time I always see people taking off the patients HELMET before anything else....DON"T DO IT unless there's an airway concern... Anyway I could go on for hours on this stuff so I'll just stop now.

Bottom line, I'm glad you're alright mate and again, Speedy recovery and I hope your family is dealing with the trauma well too.

Cheers

DAve

EMT proceedures

I don't know if this helps but all of my injuries were confined to the pelvic area.

Before help had arrived I had dragged myself on my forearms about 75 feet to get away from the possibility of the ATV rolling on top of me again, I has also taken off my helmet right after the ATV had rolled on me to be able to get out from under it as it was causing my head to be pinned since it was so much bigger then the space my body was allowed under the upturned ATV.

Maybe they figured out that my neck and head were ok, I really don't remember all the details of the conversations that well, I do remember before they turned me over off my stomach they did start an IV and got some pain killer into me.

I also remember them asking me a bunch of questions and having me move or indicate that I could feel their touch on my legs.

Tomorrow I visit the Ortho Doctor and we take a few x-rays to see how the fractures on the right side are healing. This will be a few days short of 6 weeks, hopefully they have healed enough that they will allow me to put weight on that side and begin the walking process again. :wings:
