Montero SR head unit?

Not trying to be jerk, but did you read post #23? Flip the second row seat up. Flip up the carpet and unscrew the plate under the passenger side. If there is amp you got one, if not you don't.

HTH,

jeep-N-montero was faster on the draw than me, LOL.

Doh... !

Does anyone know what the speaker polarity is on the 6x9's It's a nice clip in on the originals but I don't see any designation for + or - ?? So when I put in new 6x9's I'm not sure which lead to hook to which terminal. Thanks

I am yet to see a speaker without either the spade connector being marked with a + or the positive spade being wider than the negative.

Still stumped on the positive and negative terminals on these original Infinity 6x9's. I know I've seen some replacement jobs here and I think it was on the infinity system. Here's what I'm dealing with:

The terminals are the exact same size and they're not marked anywhere that I can see. Am I just missing something? Just don't want to wire the new ones wrong

Your attachment did not work, try uploading the picture directly to the site or provide a web link.

They are in an L shape than that means it should have a connector not two loose wires with spade terminals. Might go see what you can find on another speaker. If someone has replaced them it should use a solid color as ground wire. Or hopefully black.

So I looked at the wires on one side and the clip and no help. Here it is:

One wire is yellow with a blue stripe and a white with a blue stripe?? I suppose it would help if I had a wiring diagram, but I don't. Any ideas?

Well do you have a voltmeter with a continuity check on it?
Also if you go to www.mitsubishilinks.com they have downloadable manuals so you could find the wiring diagram there. Just a thought.

Monkey,

take the speaker out and disconnect whatever wiring you have. To check polarity attach some wire to a battery, one on the + and one on the -..AA or 9v will work. Then connect the wires to the speaker and watch the cone. It will make a static noise but observe the cone... If it moves up like it would when playing the terminal that the + from the battery is touching is the positive on the speaker. If it's not the speaker will suck in. There is a demo of this on YouTube as well.

so i replaced all the cracked/blown speakers in my montero a few weeks ago. I couldn't find 6 ohm replacement speakers that didn't cost an arm and a leg, so i just went with 4 ohm all the way around - thinking that the stock head unit would handle it without issue. And it did - for about 5 days. Then all of a sudden, no sound what so ever. i checked the connections for all the speakers - all were intact. i pulled the #2 fuse for "radio" and it was still good. The head unit still turns on and functions - but there is no sound at all - not even static.

This led me to believe that i blew the amp on the head unit.

i noticed that a double DIN won't fit (oddly), so i ordered a single DIN with a mounting kit and vehicle specific wiring harness.

this seems like a pretty straight forward job, but i heard there's an issue with the illumination wire (apparently when you turn on the lights, the dash lights won't illuminate). does anyone have a remedy for this?

Hate to revive this old thread, but I am very confused at the moment with my Montero and this seemed similar to my problem. I have a 1998 Montero with an aftermarket Kenwood head unit that the previous owner installed. I recently installed 2 new front speakers (https://www.crutchfield.com/p_1131666S/Kenwood-KFC-1666S.html) and they sound great. Haven't had time to do the rears yet, so they're still stock.

Anyway, had my first long drive in the montero this past weekend and after driving for 2 hours, the speakers stopped working. The head unit was operating normally, just no sound. I tried restarting the head unit and the car, but no luck. Later that night, after I arrived and the car had sat for a while, the speakers worked again. This happened again on my drive home after about 2 hours of driving. No sound at all. I know very little about why this is happening. Would love any help!

Thanks,
Spencer

your problem is that you bought a 4 ohms speakers and these rigs run 6 ohms...im back at this problem as the PO of this had a aftermarket unit and speakers but its trash now and ever thing looks so odd to me...4 wires to a speaker? oh i can't find speaker diagram for it too....any one? I just plan on wiring straight to the head unit to each speakers... 4 speakers is good enough for me.
