My son-in-law drives an '04 Montero Sport. He's been following me in my Disco on trails in northern Nevada for the past three years.

Aftermarket off-roading equipment for it is almost nil.

It's damned reliable and economical to drive.

The front bumper, the flimsy front skid and front diff are pretty low and vulnerable.

I tend to have to pull him out of stucks on almost every trek as the truck doesn't have any kind of limited slip or locking differentials, traction control or articulation.

The engine has plenty of poop to pull it up almost anything as long as he can keep all four wheels on the ground and it's not snow, mud or sand.

- It reall needs at least a 2 inch lift, a limited or locked rear diff and a set of BFG TA/KOs. If someone knows of a lift kit and locker for it let me know....

ARB has the OME setup for that truck.

This guy's done a lot with his sport: http://www.4x4extremesports.com/index.php

hope this helps

I dunno what diffs you guys run in the Montero Sport but mine come standard with a rear locker, and I'm told it's a genuine Mitsubishi locker.

Welcome Spartan.

Nice truck and it came with the official ExPo color!

First off a link to help you get started if you dont know it already - http://www.rocky-road.com/montero.html. No affiliation - just something I came across when I did my research.

Youre not alone about the MS. I have a 2003 AWD with rear limited slip. Cant really say much about the offroadability of mine since its my everyday driver.

And from the the limited research I did in trying to mod it - well, not a lot out there. I kinda gave up on the aftermarket bolt ons for mine in terms of armor and such. The only one I know for sure (State side) is ARB and their OME kits for the MS. And what sucks too like you said, the ARB front bumpers dont snap on the newer models. From what I know they did offer the OEM rear lockers on the older models for a year or two before dropping them. Not sure about central diff locks if it was even offered.

I plan (hopefully in the near future) on using mine more for "expeditionary" trips rather than rocks or technical terrains. Reasons mentioned above and the limits of the suspension as posted by others. Yeah I dont really need all that armor to do expedition :) .

I look forward to your mods and upgrade of your Montero Sport!

Its always nice to know im not the only one, and as for the color I may be one of the few with a Montero Sport but I do fit in with the vehicle color

As far as lifts (this might get carried a little off topic) we all know the MS is Body on frame what would it take to do a Proper body lift. I have seen it done to some MS on Montersportonline.com but the purchased theirs as a kit and is now discontinued Again hope this dosent jump too far off topic

Good for you you have a montero sport, I have 4 of them 00-04.

First, great trucks!

second, watch the radiator, lots of pressure and it can go thru hoses and over heat if u run it hard. But thats a small thing.

OK as far for aftermarket parts, OLD MAN EMU suspension kit is a must! its a 2.5 lift, comes with back springs and front and back longer shocks for when you crank the tortion bars. It will handle like a rally racer! I put on BFG mud terrain tires on all 4 trucks and they run great, loud if you drive long periods on the asphalt.

Finally get a new air intake and close the bottom intake so your intake isn't so close to water if you want to cross a river. This also gives you more power, I think about 10% more

Ill try to send you a photo of my white one

Have fun!

I thought I read somehwere that the MS DID in fact come with a rear locker... maybe in thier typical "cold weather" package (wich is comical to me since for most folks a rear locker ain't gonna help in the snow/ice ;) just get them off the road quicker for the rest of us to get around) ??? I've got a friend with one and it's a cool truck, I've never wheeled with it, but I sure lie the looks etc of them plus I'm a big fan of Mitsu's. Too bad they really never caught on here in the US... They make a good truck and some good motors too eh.

Cheers

The rear-locker will not operate above a very low MPH (I think like 12 MPH? Someone else here probably knows), so it's not something you even could use for regular driving on snow/ice laden roads. It's intention would be to lock the rear diff if you were trying to ascent a snow/ice laden incline slowly, in which case it would become very effective compared to an open rear diff.

Some Montero Sports do come with a rear locker. My friend in S. Cal has one with said locker.

Is yours a leaf sprung or coils sprung rear suspension? If coil sprung, you can swap in a 94-96 SR rear diff/axle assy for a locker. Cost of that setup is usually $350-500 from a parts yard and they're rarely worn (never ever heard of a worn Mitsu OEM diff). Bear in mind this diff is a 9.5" diff so it's huge and robust. gear ratio for an SR locker is 4.6x:1. Alternatively there are also locker setups from the 98-00 montero's with the winter package. These have 4.2x:1 gear ratio's. Choose the locker setup to match your stock gearing.

Also for additional lift you can always consider having an aftermarket spring maker make a set for you. Valley Spring Works in N. California (Dixon IIRC) makes them for Montero's and there's not reason to think they couldn't make them for the sport.

Spring spacers are also another inexpensive option although i'm not sure about the diameter of the montero sport's rear coil and which spacers will match it. For my SR, the spacers for a Toyota Sequoia fit and I bought a set to install.

Alternatively a body lift is available for pretty much any non-unibody Montero from 4crawler.com. The same lift kits will likely also work for sports although you may need different length bolts. I actually prefer a body lift for most applications because it's better at keeping the cog lower than a suspension lift.

During the install of a 2" BL you'll need to either separate or remount the front fan shroud, 'stretch' your brass brake lines in the engine bay and ensure none of the other lines are being pinched, stretched, or touching things they normally don't touch.

For a 3" BL you may need to extend your fuel filler hose and modify your transfer case lever which is what we had to do for a 95SR. I'm assuming the above mods since the designs are so similar.

As for bumpers, yes there's ARB, TJM, and a 3rd one that I can't remember. All were in the US at some point but not sure the current availability.

Alternatively you can always modify a bumper from another rig to fit, or modify your frame ends to fit another bumper which is what I did for my 96SR so that I can mount any Jeep TJ bumper up in front or back.

As for 4x4extremesports, yes his rig is very nice and heavily modified for his needs. I've spoken with him before about his mods and am impressed with how it all came out in the end although he certainly spent a pretty $ modifying it and putting in a front solid axle.

If you have any other questions about your rig, feel free to ask.
